Ok eveyone... I need some help (whats new). I have a heart rate monitor.. the kind that is a watch you wear on your wrist that communicates with a strap that I put arond my rib cage. I haven't used it yet (cuz I don't really know how)... But I keep seeing eveyone say in order to know exactly how many calories i am burning, I need to use my heart rate monitor. So my question is... How do I figure out my calories burnt from my heart rate monitor? HELP! I am going to the gym soon, and I know the machines don't track accurately. Thank you so much!!

When you start your HRM, it should tell you.. like I have the Polar FT7 and I hit the ok button once to establish my heart rate and then a second time to start my session. Then there are 4 different screens that I can flip through that tells me my heart rate, how long my session has been, calories burned, and what zone I'm in.

I'd read the manual that came with your HRM.. that should help.
  • Hehehe... there' a saying for that. RTFM.

What brand did you get? Polar has a calorie calculator built in. Be sure to enter your height, weight, and age too so it can use the correct algorithms to estimate your burn.

They are Timex Ironman something's. Not really sure which model. We've looked in the manual and can't seem to find anything for calories burned

Re: RTFM.... Did that... it doesn't say anything about calories burned... just heart rate tracking... hense why I am asking. :)

It prob. doesn't have a calorie counter then.. so I'd exchange them for one that does if you can.

Well I used my heart rate monitor to work out for 30 mins. And I found out that my HRM does track calories. According to my HRM it says I burned 895 calories... I weigh 283... so to me that seems some what possible. But according to MFP it is WAY wrong. So I am not sure what to beleive. My average heart rate was 158.

Can anyone tell me what I should believe?

Well it depends.. did you enter your height, weight, age and sex into the HRM? If you did, then its def possible.

If you did not then its no more accurate then MFP or the machine. I had a timex HRM once, and I was only able to input my weight.. and for 30 min of walking on the treadmill and the highest incline at a speed of 3.0 miles per hour, it told me I burned like 580 calories.. and granted I'm 5'9 and weigh 162 pounds.
