My gym instructor seems to think that eating 1500 cals a day is too little and that I should go for 2000, as men need 2500 to maintain. I dont know what if I should follow his advice or stick with what i'm doing?

you need to go on your BMR...and there is no set amount of calories that men or women NEED to get to survive..its all individual.
and it all depends on what you are trying to do with your body. if you are trying to lose fat, then you need to cut calories from your BMR..if you are trying to gain muscle you need to increase slighly from your BMR (while lifting)0
