Self discovery about eating habits.

Since I've joined MFP and have kept vigilant track of my calories, I've noticed that I tend to eat more and feel more hungry on the days that I don't have a bigger breakfast. When I say bigger breakfast, I'm not talking about bacon and eggs. Even if I have 1/2 a bagel with low-fat cream cheese, I tend to eat less during the day. On the mornings I have just a health shake or a breakfast bar, I have way more to eat at night and snack all day long.

Anyone else have any self discoveries about your habits?

i've noticed that if i get something quick at starbucks instead of my usual granola bar and yogurt i am famished by noon and tend to make bad food decisions... usually full of sugar... it is so interesting what our bodies can tell us if we just listen!

I need to eat 1 piece of wholegrain bread and some nice meat - like tuna or chicken breast - in every meal. And some veggies. When I dont eat that, and eat only veggies with bread, or only meat with veggies, I am hungry really fast.

Also, I have to be very careful of what I eat out of the house. Some food just makes me sick, and some does not. I thought its about how fatty it is, but its not - it just makes no sense. I have yet to figure out what it is. And no, its not milk, I am totally ok with milk!
    But not with milk-shakes, haha!

And... I have to have some snack before I go to bed, I dont fall asleep very well if Im hungry:)

It's amazing how big of a difference eating a good breakfast can have on the rest of your day. I used to just have coffee with milk in the morning and then wondered why I'd be so darn hungry after lunch. DUH! Now I drink protein powder in my coffee as soon as I get up and then have some cereal (and sometime fruit too) 2-3 hours later.

I've had lots of self discovery moments, and honestly believe these are big parts of my success so far too. If you're not recognizing your habits and actions and cravings, how can you truly change?

One thing that's hit me lately is that little tastes of things really can kill cravings. I bought a small container of vanilla ice cream for hubby to go with some cake I brought home from my mother's and I couldn't stop thinking about it. So I went ahead and took a little spoon-full and that was enough to get the "want want want" thoughts out of my head. I just have to remind myself to stop at that taste and not gorge like I used to...

Yes, I do! If I go way under one day because I've exercised a lot, or just not eaten enough, I find that I will often binge the next day. My body likes to keep things pretty steady. The other thing I know about myself is that if I'm bored, eating is one of the ways I find to amuse myself. Now I have learned to make myself be busy doing SOMETHING, when I start to feel that urge to head to the fridge to see what's available. Live and learn!

I've noticed the same thing. Even if it is just a quick bowl of cereal and a banana I make better choices through out the day. It also helps me if I start the day with exercise I tend to be more careful of what I eat the rest of the day.

Your breakfast really makes or breaks your day eh? It is important to plan your meal, so you do eat healthy! When you go to bed at night have a plan what you will eat int he morning! This way you will know exactly what you are planning on eating and won't stray from that! What type of health shake are you taking? I've been using the special k protein shake for lunches, but they don't fill me like my body needs. I'm beginning to use a new shake that is fabulous!! :)

That's a great point about the ice cream tasting. It's all about self-control, that's how we can overcome this. I'm not much of a sweet eater, I'm more of a salty/savory guy so my big problem was always at meals. I would never leave food on my plate and almost always go back for seconds (even if I felt satisfied). Now it's about tackling that habit and beating it.

RIght now I've been drinking the Slim-Fast shakes when I have a shake. I really havent explored too many others because I bought two 6-packs of the Slim-Fast when I started and I still have 5 available.

I've noticed that sometimes I'll think I'm hungry. But really I'm just thirsty. I usually crave something sweet when I'm thirsty. Been trying to drink water first. If that doesn't stop the craving. Then I add some crystal light and its been helping the cravings.

I noticed that when I eat any carbs in the morning (including oatmeal) I am hungry within 1-2 hours and throughout the day. If I eat all proteins like (eggs and turkey sausage or beans and ground turkey or veggie omelet...) I don't get hungry or even if I just have coffee/tea I am fine until around 1/2 Pm, then eat a salad/greens with protein.

I have recently accepted the fact that the Protein Smoothies that I enjoy can not be a meal for Me, I like to eat My calories and am more satisfied. Also, oatmeal that I have grown to enjoy can not be eaten until later in the day if I desire it.

I have noticed that wheat products (breads/pasta...) and white potatoes cause Me inflammation and pain and make Me itch. I went off both for over a week, as soon as I ate whole wheat bread I had to take benadryl because of the itching. I ate some french fries and I could hardly bend My knee, the day before it was just fine.

I am changing over to an anti-inflammatory type diet, in conjunction with My South Beach Plan...it's working great! Healthy Living is wayyyyy more than just losing weight, and I have finally gotten it.

This is me right here. I hate to eat back all the calories if I do a double spin class but if I don't I pay for it the next day by being ravenous!
