Hi all! Recently, I've been experiencing really awful pain behind my knees and up my calves. It hurts worst when I straighten my legs - it hurts a ton when I first get up from sitting down and start walking. For a couple of days, it was a struggle to just walk normal, instead I had to keep my knees bent and walk on my tippy toes so my legs didn't fully straighten. Last night, I really wanted to run but I had to settle for walking because it hurt so bad. I pushed myself to walk for 30 minutes, and the last half just felt awful because of the pulling behind my knees.

I am not sure what caused it, but it started earlier this week - the morning after I had gone to a bachelorette party and had been dancing. I'm thinking maybe it was from the flat flip flops I was wearing while I was dancing? No idea really, but I can't think of anything else I would have done to cause it.

Has anyone else had this kind of pain before and/or know of what I can do to get rid of it? I really want to get back to running, but at the same time don't want to get seriously injured if I push myself too hard so I"m not sure what to do. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

Since I started running, I have also felt this pain in my knee and calves. I don't know what it is, but it doesn't seem as severe as yours. It hurts most when I'm laying down and then when I get up, Wow! But it goes away quickly the more I use my legs. I don't really have health insurance so I can't see a Dr. about it.

Did ou try to stretch every muscles in the back nof your legs? You will find some good stretching exercises on this link

    http://www.halhigdon.com/15Ktraining/Stretch.htm

Stretching is a very important part of every strengthening program.

    Good luck!

I had this for awhile, I took about a week off from doing the exercises that caused the most pain and elevated and iced my knee whenever I was sitting. I know it's challenging to take that much time off from intense workouts, but it is necessary to help you heal! Then when it felt better I started using a pretty tight compression when running for a couple weeks and this really helped it. I slowly stopped using that, but have it in case my knee ever starts to feel weak again.

Is it a cramp or is it burning sensation? Does it go away or is the pain constant? How often are you stretching (all your muscles)? Are you stretching on cold muscles or do you warm up before? Avoid flip flops, high heel shoes, non supportive shoes.Make sure your running shoes are actually for running or high impact exercise, they have more support for your your heel. Look up stretches for your hamstrings, achilles tendon (the stretch should look like you are bending both knees in standing) and the gastrocnemius muscle. Always stretch after a gentle warm up (light walk). This may help a bit, but chance you may have to get therapy/dr...don't forget to ice when it's hurting. 90% of the time should be a good supportive shoe..
    Good luck

When you say knee pain do you mean behind the knee cap or on the backside of the leg?

For the last 3 or 4 weeks I've had a bother (not quite a pain) in the tendon behind my knee, kind of in the back of my leg. I attribute it to pulling my hamstring and not having enough flexibility. It hurts/bothers be most when I bend that knee in a runner's pose or squat.

I'm going to give it a few more weeks before I see a Dr. Any advice from other members would be appreciated.

    Thanks everyone!

It's behind the knee as in the back of the leg...right behind the knee and very top of the calf. And I'm not sure that I clearly explained that it feels like it's tight and I'm pulling something when I straighten my leg. It isn't constant....I'm fine when I sit down, but it's awful when I first stand up and start walking. Then it's fine for a while and starts hurting again after walking for a while. I don't stretch often...really only after a run longer than 3 miles. I know I should start stretching more!

Anyway, thanks again for the comments and advice! I really appreciate it :)
  • I had tendintis in my knee and had to go to the doctor. The pain was so bad behind my knee that I could hardly walk. The doctor gave me a precription for anti inflammatories and told me to ice it. It got better pretty quick after that. It still gets tender now and agian but not like it was.
  • I see that this is over 2 years ago, but am wondering what the diagnosis was, and did this resolve itself with or without treatment? I have almost the exact same symptoms but am putting off going to the doctor till after the first of the year.

HI, I just came across this forum looking for answers bc I am experiencing the EXACT same thing. When I first stand form sitting a long time the back of leg at knee, top of calf hurts so bad like I am stretching some muscles or tendons. Then after a few min of walking around I forget it even hurt until it happens again. I do twist my leg/knee around often to pop (I know I shouldn't) and I think now that's why. Just wondering if you had any relief or found something that helped the most with this issue?
