Sometimes people form challenges that are for a group of people over a certain amount of time. It doesn't work well if new people are constantly coming/going from the challenge - so the easiest way to indicate to people that this is the case is by stating the group is closed. It's mostly because there's no place (currently) in the forums to create a group that's only for a certain group of people. It's not meant to be elitist or anything like that - it's just that the challenges don't work well with new people always coming in. No reason to take offense.0

You're free to start your own closed group. I'm sure people take shots at them on their thread, too.
Let them have their fun. Who does it hurt, really?0 -
This Rant has officially become a closed group no one but people that agree with me may comment on it!0
