Too much protein?

Everything I read and everyone I talk to emphasizes eating protein above carbs, fats, calories, etc. But can I have too much? It seems like I go over my 76gram goal EVERY DAY-- sometimes by as much as 20 to 50 or even 70 grams. Is this bad? Is this good? And what about those articles that say 1.6 grams per pound of body weight? If that's the case, MFP has me way-WAY-under-proteined....
