So...the food pyramid which we were all brough up with has been scrapped in favour of a new nutrition plate - what are your thoughts on this? Do you think this will help childeren and parents make better food choices or is the obesity epidemic spiralling out of control and now the fast food industry should take more responsibility?

there is nothing wrong with fast food. parents are to blame if their kids are big fat *kitten*. i am to blame for me being 50lbs overweight. nobody is forced to eat at a fast food place or any other place for that matter. they make the choices

I'm glad they renamed "meat" to "protein" because not all protein comes from meat. However, I'm worried that people won't realize that there is lots of protein in veggies & grains. They should add that in the description.

Also, there are no fats. We need fats; we just need healthy fats.

I agree fast food is not to blame If the kids just want the food for the toy just buy the toy a lot of kids just want the toy. When I worked at McDonalds we sold just the toy for $1 for the kids and collectors

I'm kind of in the "neither" camp. The food pyramid wasn't so complicated that we couldn't understand it - we (as a group) chose to ignore it. The plate isn't going to make people suddenly hit their heads and say "NOW I get it!" and suddenly change their eating habits. This was okay to do, but we as a country didn't have the money to waste on it, but it's done, so oh well. But I SURE don't think the fast food industry is responsible for our eating habits.

Let's be honest there is plenty wrong with fast food but the real problem is when people stop cooking and eat out all the time. I think it is crazy to make the fast food joints responsible for people's poor choices. So no, those companies should NOT be responsible for people's poor choices.

I do think the plate is a much better visual and is a good change. I think it still reflects the influence of big agro that they have grains on the plate. The fact is you do not need grains to be healthy but the plate implies that you do and that you should eat a lot of it. They should take that same grain spot and put a catch all category for beans, nuts or at least specific whole or sprouted grains.

The only recent government action on food that made sense was the ban on trans fat. Otherwise, let the fast foods serve whatever their customers want. People have to be free to chose. Prohibition is almost never the answer.

Getting rid of that old, out dated food pyramid is long overdue in my opinion. Parents are definately to blame for their kids being overweight and unhealthy. The parent are the ones who shop for food and feed the kids, they are supposed to set an example, but when kids see their parents chomping on big macs and fries of course they follow want the same. It's all learned behavior. Monkey see, monkey do !
