Hi. I've just started, staring at day 2 in my food journal. A big problem I can already see is that when we go out to dinner, I don't know how to count some of the foods. Some are not listed, and you surely don't know what they will add. Have any ideas (other than the most obvious of 'don't go out'?

Good luck everyone. I like knowing everyone else here is working hard with me.

It's a little extra work to keep track but a lot of restaurants have the nutrition information for the menu on their websites. Some other good websites to find out calories are: http://www.nutritiondata.com/ for fast food restaurants and http://www.caloriesperhour.com/

Thanks so much! I did pick up some stuff at Subway today actually. But, they're tricky. At one place they had the calories posted sans bread. Who does that? I know I'm dieting, but bread is an essential in my diet. Unless you have handy tips to avoid that.

For me personally, I found it beneficial to eat out less often and do more at home both for when I was losing weight and now in three years of maintenance. We still go out to be sure, but not like we used to. It has actually made eating out more of a special kind of thing and we've saved a lot of money too.
