A bread question (UK)

I started MFP last week.. when I did my first grocery shop I could not figure out which bread to buy and stood like a numpty staring at the sheer choice.
At the risk of me being reduced to a gibbering wreck in the middle of Tesco tomorrow, can anyone please point me in the right direction? Which one do I go for?!!?

I get Kingsmill 50/50. I can't stand wholemeal bread but 50/50 is nice and better than just white.0

Look for things with whole grain listed on the name, or check the ingredients and make sure there is no 'enriched flour' in there. There are a few types in the USA that are only 45 calories and multi-grain which I like, not sure if you can find them near you.
Oro wheat (company) makes a nice whole wheat sandwich thin that is 100 calories. againnot sure if they are in your area.

Depends if you're looking for fewest calories (nimble is only 48 calories per slice) or quality multi seeded batch breads are the best nutritionally IMO but they have higher calories 130 (sh cals per slice!!!!)
Most advice would point you in the direction of brown bread and that you stay as far away as you can from white bread (and all white carbs in general

Warburton's do a quite nice wholemeal 400g which actually has fewer calories per slice than the version they do called "Weight Watchers from Warburtons". So I just get that one. Geeky link to mysupermarket:

I don't know if you have the same options in the UK as in the States, but check to make sure that the bread has no sugar or sugar products added and that it has as much whole grain or wholemeal flour content as possible. Sometimes you can find sprouted bread -also nutritious. These are the most natural and nutritious kinds of bread. They are worth the few extra calories over breads made from white flour or with chemical preservatives. The latter will just make you hungrier in the long term. In the States, Ezekiel 4:9 is fairly common, and the German import Mestemacher can sometimes be found.

I eat Natures Own 100% whole grain (or 100% whole wheat if they are out of the whole grain) sandwich rounds. They are 100 calories per round which is a top and bottom. Very little (I think 2 sugars) in them. I love them and because of my job, I eat alot of sandwiches for lunch. I work on a farm and you never know where you will be eating your lunch. I can sit on a tractor and eat a sandwich, even though I would prefer to be eating a salad.....0

Thanks for your replies, I like to have bread in the house because I have school age kids so have to make them sandwiches every day for their lunches but I don't want to give them white bread while I have healthy - it doesn't make any sense to?
I'll look out for the warburtons. I know it was probably a silly question but 1 week in and I just don't trust my "food instincts"0 -
I just get Hovis Nimble - 48 cals or Hovis Wholemeal - 52cals per slice.
Or if I go to Morrisons I get their Morrisons wholemeal own brand which is 121 cals for 2 slices and bigger than the Hovis ones :bigsmile:

Anyway, here in US, we have some breads that are extra fiber whole wheat with no high fructose corn syrup. Also, in organic section I found some low carb high fiber breads.
Also near deli sections, if you have those (sorry I never get out of U.S. sadly) they have things like sandwich or bagel thins that generally say 100 calories.. so if they are whole wheat I get those too. If bread says "enriched wheat flour" it's not the same as whole wheat, from what I understand.

I buy Warburton wholemeal (800gr loaf) which is 98 per slice and Warburton seeded batch (800gr loaf) which is 132 cal per slice. The last one is my favourite! I adore it lol
They are also available in smaller 400gr loaves with smaller slices (and thus less calories) but I found 2 of those weren't enough to satisfy my hunger,so I just stick to 2 slices of the bigger loaf per meal.
My children love the Warburton wholemeal one aswell,that's the only one they will eat.
I've tried other brands, Tesco's own, Hovis etc,but they just couldn't compare to these.
Obviously these are more expensive than Tesco's own brand (around £1.40 I think) but it's definitely worth it. Especially because I loooove bread. (feel free to count how much I eat in a week lol)
I must say he 50/50 bread is quite good aswell,but I only bought them as a step to changing to wholemeal (for my children) They're tasty like white bread,but more nutritious.0 -

We go to Waitrose at the end of the day and get loads of reduced price, wholemeal brad to pop in the freezer. My son had constipation problems so the first thing I look for is grams of fibre.
Try a few things. Just remember how different the calories can be per slice. Fortunately almost every bread you can get is on the data base already0
