Relatives are coming!

So, my baby boy graduates from high school next Friday, which in itself is an emotional time for me, since I will soon become an empty nester. But on top of that, my brother and his family are coming to stay for a couple of nights. They like their cocktails.:drinker: And their steaks. And their baked potatoes with all the fixings, etc. etc. I am bracing myself, especially the cocktails part. I feel like it is going to be awkward. But I'm actually feeling pretty strong about standing my ground. I guess I'm just apprehensive about the reaction. :ohwell:
Does anyone have a really diplomatic, yet firm thing to say in a situation like this?

You can still have steak and a baked potato. And even a few drinks. I say just enjoy the weekend. It's not about the food it's about the celebration. Have food for them...but have things that you will feel comfortable having. (Fruits, etc). If they say something and you really want to stick to your plan, just tell them. Nothing wrong with trying to eat well. They can still have their drinks etc.
These celebrations happen. I try to approach weekends and "events" with good decisions, but I understand that one or two days isn't going to completely unravel everything I've done. If there's a good choice to be made I opt for it, but if nothing is available or works out, I accept it and the next day pick right back up. There are 5 other good days of the week and that's still more than 2 iffy ones.
Good luck and congrats on your son's graduation!0 -
First of all, congratulations on your son's graduation. You must be very proud.
You should allow yourself to enjoy the celebration -- including some indulgences. Steak is allowed on many diets -- certain cuts are better than others. If you don't feel comfortable about the baked potato -- opt for some lower calorie sides like vegetables or a salad.
You don't have to justify your food choices to your family -- you are doing this for your own health. I'm sure they'll understand.
But don't completely cut yourself off -- indulge a little and celebrate! One weekend is not going to undo all of your hard work. In fact, sometimes these weekends end up surprising you with a loss!0 -
Thank you ladies! And thanks for the Congratulations! I will pass it along to my son. (He uses this website too, but he won't tell me his username, haha. :laugh:0

um.....how about......
Seriously though...are you not drinking for this weekend? It's your family, you won't have to explain will you? You're not trying to make it a dry weekend for everyone.
Congrats and condolences on the baby graduating :ohwell:0 -
Club soda or water with fruit in a martini glass or wine glass and no one will notice. I think peeps just like seeing glass in hand! You will do FAB just eat smaller portions and exercise a bit more. Enjoy the moments!0

Oh, I don't care if THEY drink. But it will need explaining, because that is what my family does at gatherings. Not rip-roaring drinking, but everyone is expected to drink and I made it a goal to not drink until 4th of July. I do like the idea of a highball or fancy glass with club soda and lime, that is excellent!0
