HRM?? How do they tell you how many calories you have burned

So i see alot of people using heart rate monitors to work out how many calories they burn during exercise and i don't understand how they are doing it..
When ever i exercise i just record how long iv been doing it for and guess how many calories you would burn doing an exercise like that each minute...
But i no that the ammount of calories you burn differ on how much you weigh, how fit you are, etc..
So i would really like to have a more accurate reading because i want to know for sure how many calories i am really burning...
So im considering buying a heart rate monitor....
But the problem im having is i wouldn't know how to use one...
I know that it tells you your heart rate....
But that means nothing to me ..
If my heart rate was say i dunno 82. (I don't know if that's a high or a low number for a heart rate to be)... Then how would i know that because it was 82 i had burned 20 calories.... Etc.
Its all very confusing!!
How do you work it out??
I need some help!
Is there a formula you need to do?? Etc??
I have no clue.
Any help would be grately appreciated!!

the polar monitor has settings in the data files that show you heat rate, calories burned, time exercised
it stores our data for up to 99 workouts
it takes your height and weight and heart rate into account
i love mine it was about 120 and it has a chest strap that is comfy and will not get cross signals from other people wearing monitors0 -
The heart rate monitor works it all out for you - you put a strap around your chest so that it can accurately read your heart rate, set the watch on your wrist going and it does the rest - when you finish your work out stop the watch and it will tell you how long you were going, the calories burned, your max heart rate during the work out and lots more.
You can also set targets and zones so you know you are working at your best for fat burning etc, they can get pretty advanced, but if you buy one they will come with a booklet that explains it all in more detail.
Basically they are really simple to use and it's definitely a good idea to have one if you want to know how many calories you are burning, guessing or using online calculators just doesn't cut it.0 -
HRMS are really easy to use.. I have a Polar FT7 and I absolutely love it. You just put the strap on, enter your height/weight/age/gender, hit ok once to start it and twice to track the calories... then you just exercise. At the end it will tell you how many calories you have burned, how long you exercised for and what your average and max HR was.0
