Sugar? Why is it so hard?

The most unassuming things have sugar in it and I am having a horrible time staying under my sugar goal. Any tips as to how you do it or what types of food are low sugar?

The only way to be completely sure is to become a label reader.
  • Sugar is sneaky cause it's in almost everything. You have to read the labels, especially in things such as cereal. Some of them have a box thats designed to look and sound healthy but it's high in sugar. Even a loaf of bread has sugar. If you read labels you can find products that are either lower in sugar or have no sugar. It's alittle tricky when you first start but you'll soon get the hang of it. By reducing it where you can it should help your overall levels.
Hope that helps and good luck:)

I THINK, though please correct me if I'm wrong, but anything 'clean' should be pretty safe. So nothing out a packet. Lean meat, fish, veg. But fruit, good sugar though it is (and a real weakness of mine as I can eat tonnes!) has a fair bit, and carby stuff does too, like the previous posts say re bread, some cereals, etc. Their advice is sound though, read the labels: we all should.

Or do your own cooking and simply don't put sugar in anything. I don't mean cakes, obviously, but manufacturers put sugar in all sorts of food items, even savoury! I have a small bag of sugar that I use for the occasional friend who has in their tea, it has lasted me forever.

But especially if you have a low calorie intake, it's tough to keep to the proportion of sugars that are recommended here. A very thin scraping of marmalade on one slice of toast, 75ml of skimmed milk and an apple is enough to take me over my daily 29g limit. That is not a high-sugar diet by anyone's standards.

Right now, I'm just happy that I've cut things like chocolate bars and desserts out of my diet, and I'm certainly not worrying about the sugars in fruit. For me, this about losing weight, it's about developing long term healthy eating habits - and eating fruit more regularly is one of the habits I want to get into.

So true on the cereal. Label manipulation can include portion sizes that are not realistically what you might pour into a bowl, so understanding the ratio between the actual serving size and the amount of sugar reported is relevant. I eat cold cereal at least 4 times a week, and weigh the servings to be sure I am counting properly...

As for fruit sugars, they do count. Fructose is sugar. That is why it is counted as sugar.
