I normally use my GPS to track my walking/running. but there are times, like today, when out in the woods, that you either can't get a good GPS fix, or no phone service, or both. I was wondering about some suggestions for alternate ways to ACCURATELY count distance. There are some apps that count based on your stride, but those have often been far off from the actual distance, probably because my stride measurement is wrong. So, I'm looking for 2 things in this post:

1. Suggestions for accurately counting distance walked or hiked
2. The correct way to count your stride, if that is the best alternate way.

I saw your topic and immediately thought to share the fact that I have just started using EndoMondo this week and love it! BUT...then I read your post, and realized...GPS blockage is going to ruin that suggestion.

Before I started using Endo, I had been estimating my distance by using a pedometer. There are just about 2000 steps in a mile.

    Hope that helps!

I feel your pain. When RunKeeper doesn't know what I'm up to it suddenly shows mme zooming at 30 mph across the countryside

I use runkeeper and then edit the GPS points manually when I get home online. If you get spotty GPS service thats somewhat accurate you can edit your route when you get home.

    Hope thats somewhat helpful.

I second the Nike +. I live by mine when running. Iam going to try it out this weekend when we go hiking, and see how it does in the pouch that you tie onto your shoe.

    There are two choices:

    1) use a footpod - Nike+, Polar or you can add them to some Garmin models
    2) just track your minutes for those occasions, knowing that when it comes to trail running, not all miles are created equal
