Water Aerobics: What Can I Expect?

I've just signed up for a water aerobics class. Those in the know, give me the scoop! This class will be 45 minutes at an outdoor pool. Oh my. My sincerest sympathies to anyone in that general area at the time. Need to find some old school swim suits from the 1920's to protect the eyes of the innocent...

I figure, being the massively uncoordinated buffoon that I am, it will look less hilarious to anyone brave enough to look by having my spastic body hidden in the water.

It depends entirely on the instructors style but some of the things I have undertaken in different aqua aerobics classes are:

Running on the spot, different speeds
    jumping jacks
    lunges
lots of arm motions against the resistance of the water
running as a group in a circle to create a current and then going the other way against the current

some groups use noodles and hand weights as well.

    Have fun!

Great choice! I take a water aerobics class once a week and LOVE it :) - it depends on the teacher. I've done salsa dancing, kick boxing and "marathon" in the water. Definitely running, skipping, lunges, sometimes they use weights in the water too. Just lots of resistance work!

    Enjoy!!

I've done all kinds of water aerobics from the old lady bobbing to high intensity plyo land and sea combos. It really just depends on the instructor and type of class. The best thing about it is you can make it what you want it to be. Nobody can see you but the instructor so if you want an extra hop, put it in there. If you need to slow down, do that too. :)

It's fun and different to get a realy good workout without the stress on your joints or crazy sweat. Good luck!

I wear whatever I want. Today I put my lumpy butt in a bikini, hey if they dont want me to wear it then it should fit! lol! Water Aerobics are great! I even sweated in the water. You use weights ( for pool of course ). Do running laps aross the pool, jumping jacks, lunges and you feel the burn, its low impact on your joints. Have fun!

I did water aerobics a few years ago now. Really enjoyed it. It does seem to depend on the instructor what you end up doing. One thing to remember is that because you're in the water, you won't notice sweating, so make sure you take some water for afterward (or during, depending on how easy it is to leave it on the edge of the pool!).
