I'm learning to sew and am considering making some clothes for myself since none of mine fit! I have some pattern questions.

    I love to sew. I used to make all my boys clothes, including underwear. I can try and help.

    There are sewers everywhere, they are full of nasty, yucky waste water and poo. And the occasional Ninja Turtle.

    I sew. But mostly i tailor my pants to fit me. I do want to make a few sun dresses for the summer though.

    @TDGee: LOL!

    Okay, so I have a pattern for some shirts and pants made out of a jersey knit type material but the inches for bust and waist, etc. are way smaller than I am - even the largest size listed which I think is either 20 or 22. A few months back I took a "project class" at the sewing store here and the project was a shirt and I followed cutting fabric for the pattern based on the inches listed and it turned out WAY TOO BIG......any experience with this?

    Most patterns run big. What you can do is measure the width of the pattern pieces (like the shirt front and back) and see how big they are and add them together. Remember to subtract for the seam allowance though. That will give you the size of the item you will end up with.

    Someone grab my baseball and frisbee while they are down there. I have lost so much stuff down the sewer when I was a kid, but was alwasy afraid of the alligators to try and retrieve it all.

    for me I take my measurements than measure the pattern. I want the pattern measurements at least 2 inches bigger for ease so I can put my arms in the sleeves and stuff. Though sometimes I only have about 1 in in the bust extra. After you make a few you find out what you like. If you need it smaller just use the smaller size or taper it between the sizes you need. For me I have to make it bigger so I look at the size smaller than add about that to where I cut it out. Most the time between 1/4 to 11/2 inches outside the pattern for me. But knit is very stretchy so if they are suppose to be tight than you want it cut smaller than you would for a none stretchy material. When you pull the knit how much give does it have if you have 10 inches of material when you stretch it, does it go how many inches. once you find that out you can figure what size you want with how much stretch. (Grin) I don't really know what I'm doing most the time so I just call the finished project art. I hope it works for you let us know how it turns out.

    Thanks everyone!

    @sewer comments: I watched that movie when I was kid where they flushed the baby alligator down the toilet and have been terrified of finding a giant alligator in my house ever since!
