Just a question. I always stop my hrm when i finish my workout but my friend lets hers run tillher rate returns to normal. Am i supposed to do that.
She was explaining while your heart rate is still high you are burning calories still.

I stop mine when I cool down and my HR is "not in zone."
I'd rather underestimate my burn than overestimate0 -
i dont know the answer but i heard this as well so i will be interested to know what others say.0

I usually stop might when I am done...I know you continue to burn calories but I figure those extra calories help for when I go over on cals....just my thought0

You do still burn calories after your workout (called the "after burn"), but I also turn mine off as soon as my workout is over. My HR returns to normal pretty quickly so it's not a ton of calories to worry about for me.0

This is true, you do have an afterburn. Studies also show that the next day after exercise (particularly strength training) you burn more calories at rest. I turn my HRM off after my cooldowns, go change, but then I walk home and turn my HRM on for that, so my walk probably incorporates some of the afterburn from my classes - but then I turn it straight off when I'm home regardless of my heartrate (I live up a very big hill). However, the fitter you get the quicker your heart rate will revert to its resting state.0

You do have an afterburn. The problem is though that HRM's are very inaccurate below a certain HR so it's pointless to try to see how much you burned after a workout.
People have been trying to wear their HRM throughout the day to see what they burn. I tried this once and it told me I burned 4000cals in one day which I know was not anywhere near correct.0 -

I will run it for about three to four minutes after my workout, or until my HR gets down to 115. Then I shut it off.0

Thanks everyone for your replies. I think i will stay with turning it off when my workout is complete.
