with all these posts lately on calories in calories out, do/don't eat exercise calories. eat all your calories it goes on and on.
so, been thinking lately on this subject. sat this morning and went back in my tracking and took a whole normal week for me and did some figuring. here's what i came up with.
mfp says i need 2190 to life
mfp says i need 1200 to lose 2#s a week
i took the 2190 X 7(days a wk) = 15,330 - 7,000(lose 2#s wk) = 8,330 calories to eat just to live and lose 2#s a week.
than i added all the calories i ate 12,204 and all the exercise calories 5450
2190x7=15,330-7000=8330
8330-12204= -3874+5450=1576
so if i figured right i am off by 1576 calories that i could and should have eaten. but, instead i think i have been putting myself bordering the starvation mode. this adverges out to be short 225 calories a day. doesn't seem like much, but when added up it's over 1,000
so, next week (i weigh in on tues) i am going to get as close to as possible to my total to eat and see what happens.
now i know why you eat your exercise calories if i don't i am only eating on 421 a day.

sorry so long i just want to double check my way of thinking. hope i didn't total confuse everyone...LOL
thanks, chipper

Wow! I am very confused LOL:laugh: however math is not my best subject! I have a hard time eating all my exercise calories, its not that i don't believe i should it is just that i can't . I eat healthy all day and my wanting to eat at night is a problem. I get to about 9 pm and i still have alot of calories to eat but i am going to bed not to long after 9 or 10 (usually) and i don't want to eat and sleep. I don't know someone told me a calorie is calories it doesn't matter what time in a 24 hour period you eat it. I am not so sure about that. anyway i think its awesome u took the time to figure that all out, cause i would still be on the calories vs exercise calories :noway: i will be looking for your post on the results of "experiment" next week. thanks for sharing .:flowerforyou:

You know I don't eat my exercise calories at all. I'm barely able to get to 1200 a day. Simply because I drink diet soda (I quit a few weeks ago) and now drink water. Lots of water. On top of that I mainly eat fruits, veggies, whole grains and chicken. I'm getting where I'm craving different fruits instead of chocolate (which I used to eat like crazy and crave ALL the time). But in eating this way, I've found that my stomach has shrunk. I actually get the feeling of being full! I used to put away the food like crazy, I had a huge appetite. Like just now I made a smoothie with 1 banana, 1 cup of strawberries, and 1 cup of Dannon Light & Fit. It was sooooo good and I'm so full! So whether its wrong or right I don't know what more I can do to make myself eat more!

I'm confused on the matter of calories and starvation mode anyway. Not that I'm starving. When I'm hungry I eat. Its just I eat better things now. An apple as opposed to a bag of chips or candy bar. But back to my confusion, I'm confused if they say you go in starvation mode how do people who have gastric bypass lose weight? My friend had it and only could eat about 1 cup a food every few hours. Wouldn't that be a form of starvation mode?

I'm not trying to argue with the experts, I agree you shouldn't deprive yourself of food. I don't starve myself, when my head hits the pillow at night I feel great. Its just the choices I make are better ones.

So to sum this ramble all up I'm confused as well! I would love to go to a nutritionist and bombard them with al my questions!
  • Just to answer the "starvation mode" question. It just means that your body recognizes that you aren't eating as much as you used to. So, it thinks that there is a lack of food or something. To counter that (and I think this just proves the beautiful design of our bodies), our body stops using calories SO much. Basically, if you have an unlimited supply of water, you would drink it without a second thought; however, if you only had so much, you would ration it out to last you. That is what your body does with calories. You still use calories; therefore, you can still lose weight. The catch is that putting your body through this will make it more difficult to lose those pounds. What this program is trying to do is allow you to lose weight while weening your body off of the unneeded calories. Weening will help you lose weight faster b/c your body doesn't think there is so much of a problem, so it doesn't ration calories very strictly; whereas, cutting a large chunk of what you used to eat will "shock" your body. Congratulations on your success, you have gotten your body used to the good stuff. It thinks that is all that it needs. I am still in the process of getting there, and stories like yours gives me hope! Hope this cleared your confusion! :drinker:

Well the week before I went low calorie on here I tried Weight Watchers, the points system. I didn't like the fact that you COULD still eat the bad stuff even though it would be high in points. My goal was to get off the bad foods I had been eating. And with some training I did!

My major MOTIVATION came from a show on BBC America, called You Are What You Eat. It shows people who have bad habits (like I used to) what they are eating in a weeks time spread out on a table. When you see it you think oh my gosh I'm eating that!!! It's a real eye opener. Check out the show if you can, it is the basis of my wanting to get healthy.

I do eat something sweet when its that time of the month, I like the Fiber One granola bars. But mainly I'm starting to crave more fruits.

Thank you for clearing that up for me by the way!
