basically i brought a hrm this morning, set it all up ( 5"1 in height, weight 113 pounds ) and went to boxing class here are the details;
duration: 1:04hr
avg heart rate: 162
max hr: 195
avg cal burn per hr: 574
max cal burn: 721
total cal burn: 619
so really my question is this accurate! as i usually use my fitness pals sparring for this class, has anyone else done boxing class before? also my hrm has a heart strap. thank you for your time

Seems pretty standard to me. That's about what I burn doing an hour of Turbo Fire (which is basically kick boxing)0

I have been doing some boxing routines for about a year and the burns are consistently high - I wouldn't be surprised if those are right. Boxing is hard work! Nice job!0

I agree seems accurate to me too. Most sites give you the same burn for this type of activity. Thanks for the stats every confirmation makes me feel better !0

ah thats guys, ive been looking at other calulaters and they mention this vox2 thing that apprently you should enter into your hrm to make it more accurate but my hrm does not allow this function. i just dont want to over estimate the calories i have burnt! but thatnyou for your responses0

Another vote for "Agree". Pretty consistant with what I get in my cardio kickboxing class with a former Golden Gloves boxer instructor (i.e. more boxing moves than the other instructors we have)0

It's possible, but the number is probably too high. While the total number of 570-something for an hour is not that high by itself, at 113lbs, it represents a pretty good intensity.
Here is a comparison: at your weight, in order to burn that many calories in an hour, you need to run at a continuous pace of around 9:00 per mile for an hour. If you can do that, and you were working steadily at that same intensity for the entire boxing class, then it might be in the ballpark. If not, then it is an overestimate.
One of the issues is that upper body work results in a heart rate increase that is disproportionate to actual oxygen uptake. In other words, you don't burn as many calories as the heart rate level would suggest. Since HRMs only measure heart rate, they interpret the elevated heart rate as evidence you are burning more calories than you actually are.
Now if the class involved more kickboxing moves, that would affect the calorie count as well.
None of this takes away from the quality of boxing classes as a workout--it has more to do with the fact that you have a smaller mass (body weight) and all HRMs consistently overestimate calories burned from doing arm work.0 -
well it is more of an aerobic class, involving warm ups, sprinting, burpies, star jumps, bunny hops, sort of 'tag game', sparring, and general circuit training. rather than just punching... hmm its hard to find something that is accurate,0
