Hi to all of you who step on the scale not just every day, but sometimes 2,3,4x a day to see if you have lost weight.
I did a bit of an experiment while I was in a dreaded plateau :grumble: . I hit 154 and sceeeeeeeeeach that was it. I weighed and weighed and ....nothing.:explode:
I went to the msg boards, read banks post :flowerforyou:
http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/20343-how-i-have-avoided-plateauing-length-warning
and tried all of the suggestions over 3 wk period.
NOTHING. :noway:
Then for whatever reason my body's engine kicked in and vrooom, I am now losing steadily at 1 lb a wk.
So here was my experiment. I got on the scale every morning for 3 wks. (ok i got on 3x a day, but dont tell anyone) For this experiment I will use the 1x, in the morning, after potty break and before any intake of food.
wk 1 154,155,153,154,154,153.5,154 (arggggggggggggh)
wk 2, 154,153.5,153,5,154.5.154 (WHAT?) 153,153
WK 3 153,155,154,153,153,153,152.5,153
Now I know that was boring, but what I was trying to show everyone is :
1) a watched pot never boils
2) our weight fluctuates due to the food we eat (sodium), TOM, water consumption(actually helps you lose weight), and plain old body chemistry.
3) I would have had the same results if I weighed 1x a week, same time each week, and wouldnt have had the stress of all those ups and downs.
Conclusion:
I am Jeannie and I am a weigh-a-holic.
I am going to work day by day to keep from getting on the scale and hope to only weigh every 10 days, which seems to be MY cycle.
I will keep coming back to MFP cuz it works if you work it!
Anyone want to join me? maybe we can start a thread!
I dont think there is a 12 step program for our problem..........YET!

I will join you, because I have found that my plateau broke when I stopped weighing myself daily. Instead of 10 days, though, I will do a week because that fits my cycle. Since going back to work, my "routine" and spare time have been jostled, which led to me not weighing myself daily (ok, two to three times daily ). So, Saturdays will be my weigh-ins.0

Ok so I will weigh in every 10 days. I have fought the scale and won this morning ! I think I am going to move it to my DH dungeon (ok it is a den, but dark like a cave lol) I wont go in THERE more than 1x a wk or 10 days!!
thanks for your support. :flowerforyou:0 -
I have an ongoing hate relationship with my scale right now ,too. I may be a weigh-a-holic. Every morning it sits there, consistently at 158.5, sometimes 159.
I too hit a plateau that I knew darn well was on its way, but I think I may know what's going on. One (or both) of two things are happening.
1. I'm not eating enough. I may be burning more 'at-rest' calories and I may have mis-categorized myself when I set up my MFP cal intake allowance. I listed it as sedentary because I do sit at my desk for work, but I also do a little bit of walking at work, and take the stairs to get to the cafeteria, as well as running back and forth between the XRAY area and my desk. Also, it dawned on me that 3+ months into all this hard work, my metabolism has probably gotten higher, which will DEFINITELY burn higher numbers of calories. Time to EAT!!!!!
2. I bough a HRM (Mio brand at Wallyworld for $27). Very interesting thing: all this time, PRE HRM I've been aiming for a higher HR during my workouts for better weight loss, but there's a problem with that. Consistently higher HRs mean I'm in a higher HR zone % (at least that's what the HRM is telling me). So I'm burning MORE accessible, bloodstream cals, and fewer FAT CALS!!! That's the bad news. The good news is that my heart is healthier, which is always great, but my hips are still reminiscent of a truck backing up (beep -- beep --- beep --- beep). I am going to have to take a few workouts a week at a deliberately easier pace in order to access the 'fat burning zone'.
Isn't education great??
Overall, I feel wonderful, and that's the most important thing. So now that I'm aware of the possible tweaks I need to make, I also need to avoid that scale and give it a couple weeks to produce results. Right now, the scale is right next to my darn BED (okay, I'm a weigh-a-holic, and we all know admitting it is the first step toward recovery.
I"m going to put it in my sons room, which is out of the way, and therefore less tempting.0 -
Here's the 12 step program I am considering:
Step 1: buy a baseball bat
Steps 2-11 hit the scale ten times with the bat
Step 12: throw the scale out the window.
Seriously, I've stopped weighing myself entirely. I measure, and make sure my clothes still fit. I'm to the point, thanks to finally getting serious about my weight training that the scale is going UP! Grrrrr. . . but, my butt continues to shrink, so. . .. .0 -
That is exactly what I do. I weigh myself when I wake up, when I get back from my jog, and about 50 other times during the day. I need to throw the scale out! Now that I know there are others out there like me I might be able to go without the scale. I just hope the withdrawls arn't too bad! lol0
-
Haha, I'm a weighaholic too  I just don't let it bother me though. I mainly do it out of curiosity. Also, I have to weigh multiple times due to my body's 'schedule.' I don't empty out right away...I actually *have* to eat breakfast first lol. So I weigh upon waking up, then after breakfast (to see how much breakfast weighed), and then after I go potty. Thennnn I see how much I weigh when I'm mostly empty. I don't do it every day though, some mornings I don't have time because I like the extra 10 minutes of sleep!
Russia, just to keep you from worrying, it actually doesn't matter in what 'zone' you are in. Did you know that you burn the most % of fat calories when you're at rest? About 60%!
So just sit around! :drinker:
Haha, I'm just kidding, that doesn't work. Remaining at a lower intensity will allow you to go longer, so if you can jog for over 90 minutes, then you'll start burning a lot of fat, but only because your glycogen levels will be low. It's much better to work at higher intensities to burn more calories, because you'll actually be burning more calories, so fat calories will be just as high as they would be from walking even at a lower %.
Walk 90 Min (HR ~65%): 450 Cal, 50% Fat: 225 cals
Jog 90 Min. (HR~75-80%): 900 Cal., 25% Fat: 225 cals
Of course, you wouldn't have to jog for 90 min. You could jog for 45 min and get the same results as walking for 90 minutes.
It really is all about calories in vs. out. You have no way of controlling what your body will use as fuel. It will always pull from adipose when you're in a deficit, whether you've used a ton of glucose or not. :flowerforyou:0 -

Yay im not the only one!
I weigh myself twice a day, but only count the one right in the morning. I have lost 6 lbs in 4 days (over a pound a day) but until its been a whole week, I will probably see it go up a little then see the actual amount lost.0 -

YAY for you!
I came into my office and got into MFP instead. We are leaving to go to dinner and a comedy show with friends, so I will be distracted soon. We are seeing Frank Caliendo, I hope to come home with a side ache and sore cheeks from laughing. :laugh:0 -

laugh HARD...it burns calories! I like him, have fun :drinker:0 -
I'll join you - I'm also a weightaholic - on and off the scales 3 times every morning!
After 4 days I've only lost 0.6oz ! not even a pound
I've steered clear of ALL sweets even though I really had the urge for a sugar fix the other day, but I have to take my diabetes into account.
I went and bought some Cadbury's Bournville Really Dark chocolate, it stats on the pack the nutritional info for each chunk  It was so sour I could only eat 2 chunks - in 3 hours :noway:
I've just (finally) been registered with a Dietition whom will weight me every fortnight, as from 03 October, so I think I will only check-in then - if I can keep off my scales that is :ohwell: Then again, I might weight every day still, but only record once a fortnight- when I've had the 'professional' verdict :laugh:0 -
:flowerforyou: Ahh we are all doing so well! I resisted the scale monster for the entire day. I will do it a gain today. Period.
I cannot believe somethign so small and benign can have such a powerful effect on a grown woman. Geez.
have a great sunday my beautiful lady friends!:flowerforyou:0 -

Mwah hah hah hah! My evil plan to overthrow our scale overlords is nearly complete. . .:devil:0 -
okay, i check my weight at night after i get home from the gym. because i know then that i have eaten and had a lot of water to drink and its okay that the number is higher (didn't say this was rational). I don't get on the scale in the morning UNLESS the scale the night before showed me weighing LESS than whatever my last recorded weigh in was. For example, right now im at 239. If my scale tonight showed 238.5, then i'd weigh in the morning and record it, because i KNOW it would be less than 239. How silly is that?0

We all have our own rational.
When I started I weighed myself at night, fully clothed, after drinking 32 oz of water. I logged this weight.
The next week I weighed myself 1st thing in morning, no clothes, potty break.
Of course I was down like 6 pounds which was just what I needed to move me to the 2nd week.
I know I was only fooling myself, but it was just the motivation I needed. :ohwell: :ohwell:
Humans is funny creatures, yes they are :flowerforyou:0
