Yesterday I did weights for the first time in FOREVER. I stretched really good beforehand but obviously still got sore because that's pretty much the first time I've seriously attempted arm workouts. How long should I wait until I can do weights again? Is it bad to power through the soreness and do arm exercises again today?

I would rest arms today, maybe some light stretches, and then do arm weights tomorrow. The best way to get rid of the pain is to work the muscles.

Weights should be done about 3 times a week, so give your muscles a chance to heal today and hit it again tomorrow. BTW, good job.

give your muscles a day rest. I do strength training every other day pretty much, so they can heal. If they're still sore day after tomorrow you can try to push through. Thats what i did when i first started lifting.

NEVER. EVER. stretch BEFORE a workout. ALWAYS stretch after cardio, or after your entire workout.

That being said, your muscles need between 30-72 hours rest between weights. Any less & you're tearing them too much. Any more & you begin to lose the muscle you gained since your last workout.

It is possible to do weights two (or more) days in a row. But make sure you're working opposing muscles each day. (ex. legs one day, upper body the next)
  • I thought you could do weights everyday, just not the same muscle groups. Do arms one day and legs the next. Giving each group at least a day to recover. I also heard core can be done everyday. Please correct me if I am wrong because this is my routine.

Not a stupid question at all. When you work out with weights, you literally damage the muscle tissue. You should allow at least a day, maybe two before you work the arms (or anything else that hurts) again. You want to be a little sore, that tells you that you had a good workout and will build muscle as it heals, but you don't want to hurt yourself so much that you can't work out at all for weeks afterwards. HTH...

This is what I do too.

Generally you get the most benefit from weights by doing them every two days (it allows the muscle fibres to repair themselves and grow stronger before they get tested again). That said, there's no harm in working your arms out again whilst they're still sore (and if you're anything like most people, they will actually be worse the second day after exercise - something to look forward to!). If you've pulled or twinged anything however make sure you rest until completely healed.

Stretching cold muscles can result in a tear.

Give your muscles time to recover. Rest them today.

You should do a warm-up before you exercise and save stretching for after your workout.
