Kids and Exercise

Hey Gang,
I am looking for opinions. I have 3 kids, my 9 year old son used to be a football player, but due to a severe concussion I will not be letting him play this year. Unfortunately due to us limiting his physical activities until he got the all clear from the doctor has put on about 9 pounds and has gotten very soft. He used to be in excellent condition, so much so I was kinda jealous. He tried on a pair of shorts this morning for school and couldn't button them. He was almost in tears. Anyway as I said the doctor has given him the go ahead to start exercising. On the opposite end of the scale is my older son who will be 11. He is stick thin and barely weighs 60 pounds. Both of them have been asking me to try P90X (they see there mom and dad do it). What are your opinions?
I was thinking of letting them do it, but only the body weight exercises and the plyo and kenpo x dvd's. I also heard it was ok to let them use very light weights. Thoughts please????

Yes of course they can, just no heavy weights and make sure they eat healthy and get back their calories. It they are having fun at it let them give it a go.0

I let my 5 and 9 year old work out with me all the time. Your sons will be at an age where weight training is part of their gym soon anyway. Just keep the weights low if you allow them to try them. It's great to allow them to make exercise and healthy eating part of their lifestyles now. Hopefully they will continue it into adulthood.0

My 11 year old does some of the P90X DVDs with me. I even let him do some of the weight training with light weights. His body tells him when he's had too much. Working out has done wonders for his endurance during sports.0

Tae Bo Kicks is great for kids (especially boys) - it gets good reviews. Netflix has it for rent. Here's a review on Collage Video http://www.collagevideo.com/workout-video/tae-bo-kicks-for-kids-7440 - unfortunately they took the video clip down.0

Shawn T has a workout dvd specifically for kids thats a lot of fun, I can't remember what it's called but my sister has it. If they enjoy doing p90x that's great but if they find it boring or whatnot maybe look into that and see if they'd enjoy it.0

One of my upline coaches recommended this book. I respect this man immensely and have no doubt that he would not steer me wrong. He knows me well and knows my family. I'll let you know what I think. However he did say he felt that P90X is to intense for someone under the age of 15. I may actually do the program in the book with them. Could be some good father/son bonding time.

It is available to my nook, so I think I am going to download a sample before I buy it.0 -

I have both Shaun T's Fit Kids Club and Tony Horton's Tony and the Kids. Both are not challenging for him (my 9 year old). Remember he was used to 4 days a week 2 hours a day of football practice in 85-90 degree heat (practice started the last week of July)0 -
My 3 year old knows the names of all my DVDs and regularly participates (albeit on a limited level, and only if he wants to). He now says, "Knuckles, Front Kick, Back Kick" and tries to do it with the Kenpo X DVD. I figure that we're setting a good example by exercising and incorporating it into his day.0

My kids took Kenpo for a few years, so they definitely identify with Kenpo X.0 -
My 12 year old and my 14 year old did P90X in their P.E. classes. I think if you start off slow, he should be fine. HRM a must though! Try walking/jogging...it's great for him physically and it's a wonderful father/son bonding activity! My husband is a former Marine and he said jogging/running really got him into shape!0
