Low Salt/Sodium Diet

At the hospital yesterday (I suffer from Mixed Connective Tissue Disease) they told me my bp is far too high yet again - has been an issue for the last 9 months or so - and they are wanting to put me on medication. I've asked for time to try and reduce it through diet and exercise as I really don't want to take any more medication and they've agreed to let me try for a couple of months.
They mentioned that reducing my salt intake can have a massive affect on bp and wondered if anyone else is following a low salt/sodium diet. I don't add salt to any of my food and I try not to eat processed foods but just checking my diary for this week it looks like I will have to give up smoked fish which is a shame as I don't like "plain" fish.
Any suggestions welcome.

I have Meniere's Disease which requires me to be super low sodium. About the only processed food I eat now is salad dressing and spray butter. I've even started making my own tomato sauces from fresh tomatoes because there is so much sodium in canned tomatoes. It has been a wake up for me to learn how much sodium is already in fresh fruits and veggies, not to mention canned/packaged foods. I've had to switch a lot of my seasoning over to no salt seasonings and when I do use a salted seasoning I measure it out so I know exactly what I'm getting. I'm not sure I really have any suggestions for you but definitely know the boat you're in.
If you cook you're own fish, try some of the no salt seasonings.
I'm trying to come up with a low sodium stir fry sauce.... I love stir fry but the soy sauce is definitely a no no now
Gotta watch out for cheese too... never would have thought so much sodium is in cheese.
Good luck I hope you're able to get your bp under control and not have to go on meds.0 -
Many thanks for your reply. I don't eat cheese apart from cream cheese but even that has quite a bit of salt in it so I will limit myself on that too. I'm going to have to just read all the labels on everything very carefully from now on I think.
Good luck with your stir fry sauce, hope you find one!
