I was out most of today for work and found that I was starving because I couldn't eat my usual 5-6 mini meals. I took almonds and a lara bar with me -- other suggestions for traveling meals?
Thanks!!

Those are great! I have the same issue. I always pack some clif bars with me. I also enjoy any breakfast bars that kashi makes too.

I have a small lunch box that I can put a small ice pack in. I take string cheese (weight watchers 50 cal), yogurt, fresh fruit diced up, nuts and larabars are good too.

-Veggies and cheese. Laughing Cow cheese wedges hold up well at room temperature, as does string cheese.
-Apples and Peanut Butter: I slice up apples and put two tablespoons of peanut butter in a small tupperware.
-Salad: I mix up lots of different veggies and usually two kinds of protein with me. As long as I have olives, cheese and another kind of protein, I usually don't even want a dressing. My partner taught me to throw the fork right in the tupperware container. It doesn't work quite as well when the extra protein is tuna fish, but I have gotten used to it and I know where my fork is.
-Sandwiches: Use sandwich thins to keep it light, load on the veggies and add some kind of protein.

my prior job involved quite a bit of travel around the state, and to a few of our other locations. I really put on some weight when that started because of a few bad habits:
    a) skipping meals, I got to where i literally might forget if I even ate that day. no hunger pangs, and i would get busy and not realize it until perhaps 7pm.. when I ate after not eating all day, I might get a pizza or box of chicken, etc..
    b) fast food. before that job role I never really ate any fast food. I am considered a foodie by most of my friends, and I just did not like the idea of "wasting" a meal eating fast food when I could have something "real". the bad part is that fast food is everywhere and when you are on the road it is quick and easy to fall into that habit.
    c) big guy's syndrome. I wrote a post about this on this site a couple of months ago.. I would never order the small steak, the single burger, etc. it was almost as if I was resigned to being a big guy and people assume a big guy has a big appetite.

I started my weight loss by simply changing the three bad habits listed above. I eat about every 3 hours, as that works for me and I never feel hungry. I eliminated fast food from my diet, and I order what is RIGHT for me, and changed how I am looking at food. I still enjoy food, but I cook healthier meals 90% of the time. I will order smaller portions, and eliminate the appetizers. I also made one simple adjustment while on the road. I realized that even small towns have fast food restaurants, but they also have grocery stores. One town i used to frequent had a wendy's that i visited every time I was in town. Literally right behind the wendy's was a Kroger and I was able to run in and get something healthy to eat instead of eating fast food. If I feel i might not be able to get anything healthy, I will throw a couple of pouches of protein powder in my bag. I have a couple that I use that are very good mixed with just cold water.

I mentioned the mindset of a big guy. it is tempting when out of town and on expenses to order food you do not need. If at a hotel restaurant, i might order some chicken wings, a salad and a steak. I changed that mindset and was proud to order things that were not even on the menu. they had a chicken breast with cheese and gravy and meth..(ok, slight exaggeration) and they had another dish that came with a side of green beans. after doing this for awhile, they knew my order would be a grilled boneless/skinless chicken breast, without all of the junk on top, and a side of green beans.

I also discovered another trick. I would often buy lunch/dinner for customers and if I started off and ordered a salad, they might feel i was encouraging them to eat something cheap. I would ask them to go first, as I was not sure what I wanted. they would then order what ever they desired and I would order my salad last.. if they asked, i would simply admit that I was watching what I was eating.

I hope I helped a little, and that i did not ramble too much.
    Good Luck!
    Mike
