Typical day living with a non-calorie counting spouse

I know I'm not alone.
My husband started a new job a few months ago. He works 6am-2pm. It's nice, he used to work evening shift so now he's at home before me and the kids. We get to spend evenings together now! If he doesn't like what's in the fridge for dinner ...he will make dinner and it's ready by the time the kids and I get home. How nice you say!?
Yes, sure. Thing is, he is skinny and never dieted a day in his life, probably never will. He's 6'5 and weights about 170 (on a good day!). Healthy, no. But he works outside, so he's in pretty good shape. Work for him is his exercise.
So, he cooks what he likes to eat: Pizzas, chicken nuggets, perogies, chicken wings, burgers, fries, potatoes, you get the picture? I call it man food. He steams vegetables, at least I find it hard to reach for the healthy meals I have prepared for myself (I cook on Sunday and eat leftovers most of the week). I usually pick the healthy portion of what he cooked (veggies!) and eat 'my' food. But it's hard to ignore that nice pizza he makes! On top of that, all evening he's munching on some junk food he bought on his way home (namely ice cream, chocolate chip cookies, chips, caramel cakes, whatever he craves for as a snack!) .. the stuff I don't buy but the crap still finds it's way in my house
(I have to add that I feel guilty not eating his food and congratulating him on a meal well done. I want him to keep cooking, sometimes it's a nice change. He enjoys trying new recipes, but they're usually for 'man' food!)
I have pretty good willpower. Most of the time. I will watch him eat that food and won't touch it. But it's not easy. If I take a bite, that's it. I'm kaput!

Oh, how I hear that. My husband is in the military so he has to stay in pretty good shape and he eats whatever he wants. Just today he said to me, "Hey, this weekend I think I'll make a double batch of walnut brownies." I told him if he did it, I'd stab him in the face.0

Same problem at my house.0

I totally know how you feel. My fiance doesn't eat much, but he can eat whatever he wants!! He'll by a box of cookies or bag of chips and then leave it sitting around the house! I purposely don't buy that stuff because I know I'll want to eat it!! Lately he's been on an ice cream drumstick kick. I LOVE THOSE!!! Luckily Skinny Cow makes one so most of the time I'm good and eat the low cal version...but sometimes! I actually make him hide cookies and candy he buys because I'm usually pretty good at out of site, out of mind. He thinks I"m crazy though and really doesn't understand! Oh well......0

I hear ya, too! My hubby fixes dinner for himself and the kids when i work late. I don't know which is worse "man" food, or kiddie food. Tonight was corn dogs and tater tots! But at least he's stopped asking me if I want some.0

I couldn't deal with that personally, but you really shouldn't feel bad about not eating the food. I'm sure he understands that you're following a certain food plan.0

She hasn't made any after I started my diet. The next time she makes one, I'm gonna have to look up her ingredient list, calculate calories per pie and make sure to portion my slice right...0 -
My husband always says.."Great, you're on a diet..now we'll lose weight whether we want to or not!" I fix the meals, and I eat my lean cuisine while they dine on fried chicken, steaks, and anything and everything smothered with gravy! It's sooooo hard! He's 6'5" too, and any fat he has is just on his belly..he has bird legs! Lol! He really is trying to be supportive, though, and knows I will have to stick with it forever. It will always be a struggle to keep on the path. God knows we love our men...and I'm sure he knows we sometimes want to hit them with the chicken drumsticks they shove in their mouths! Hee hee!0

My husand is the same way... 6'2" weighing in at 155... The man can throw down food that I gain weight just smelling! And he is man food type guy as well. I have to make 2 different meals everytime! I also cannot do the moderate eating... one bite leads to another & to another.... Good luck!0

I'd give my right arm to have a home-cooked meal prepared for me when I come home. Sure, the execution isn't how you want it to be, but the thought is there. I know it must suck to have tempting food around, don't get me wrong.
If he enjoys trying new recipes, see what happens if you leave a recipe for one of your meals on the kitchen counter. Maybe he'll get the hint.0 -
Right there with ya except my husband isn't skinny. Every time I talk about the both of us eating healthier he looks at me with a blank stare. I just have to make sure I get to the kitchen first to make dinner, otherwise I'll end up with mac n cheese, pizza or some other evil dish in my kitchen. I'm thinking about making my own frozen dinners of tasty but healthy meals so I won't feel as tempted on those days.
SabrinaJL.... I'll bet his reaction was priceless.0 -
I have this exact problem.. but times that by THREE MEN! lol. I live with my partner and a gay couple. All have amazing bodies but good gosh the food they eat!! meat meat meat meat, pies, pizza, chips. I've sort of got myself on my own food plan but it's so hard when I'm constantly surrounded by all the smells and such of their food.0
