Quitting Smoking

Ok, so I've noticed lot of you out there have quit smoking, congrats to all of you! My question is how did you do it???

I've tried cold turkey (yummmm, lol) the patch, welbutrin, the gum... pretty much everything you can think of! And have failed miserably every time! I've stopped smoking in my house, I've tried putting my ciggs in the trunk of my car, but I'm having no luck... I'm about a pack a day smoker and I hate it!

Any helpful hints would be greatly appreciated!!

    I quit cold turkey..a pain in the rear (so was I) but that's all that worked for me. I ate cinnamon certs like crazy and chewed on straws. Chewing gum helps too. I also ate everything in the house..part of the reason I'm here! lol
  • Chantix....I found it very easy..After taking it for about a week I disposed of all ash trays, cigs, lighters and cleaned my car. Several days before my quit day I no longer smoked while driving or first thing in the morning. Half of smoking is addiction and habbit start breaking some of the habbits before the quit date. I have been smoke free for 7 months. It was the easiest way I have tried yet. Good luck I feel so good and when I get on the treadmill I am walking about 50 minutes at a fast pace and I don't get out of breath at all thst is the best feeling....Check into it!!!! Good Luck!!!!
    I only gained 2 pounds....my doctor said it was unbelieveable he hadn't seen that before...

    lol, I want to kill people! Even with the stuff thats supposed to take the edge off, then I just strangle them :laugh:
  • I went on a vacay for three days with people who didn't smoke. I stayed with people who didn't smoke. So I made a deal with myself I wouldn't smoke for those three days. I didn't...it was hard and its only been a day since I have been back but I am almost four days smoke free.
    I don't know if this will help you...but I know that surrounding yourself with non smokers does help. Just watch how they work.....and realize how smoking is not imperative to their life.

    They say it takes practice to quit.

    So, if that is so, I"m an expert quitter, because I have quit 4 MAJOR times in my life. Each one lasted around 3 years. I'm not quite at 3 years yet, but I have no intention of failing this time. This is for good. Given my age (45), I'm not so cocky anymore about the "I can quit anytime I want to' attitude. It could be the next time I pick up a cigarette, I may never be able to put it down again, and that scares me.

    You've tried everything? So did I.

    There isn't any quitting method, or cessation aid out there that doesn't work. THEY ALL WORK.
    It's the user failing to use the tool in a way that enables them to have the freedom they desire.

    Gums, pills, the patch, hypnosis, cold turkey, they will ALL WORK, if you let them. The level of your committment is going to be what makes the difference in whether something 'works' or not.

    The part of you that wants to be free of that enslavement has to want it worse than the part of you that doesn't take the freedom seriously. Does that makes sense?

    I may be oversimplifying things here, or sound like I don't care, but that is NOT the case. I want you to quit worse than you do, trust me. All I know is that you have to want it. YOu have to line up every defense you can, ones that have worked (somewhat) in the past, and get help. Help that is RIGHT THERE, a phone call or a desk-length away. You have to have back-up plan A, B, C, D, E, and F, in order to break free of this menace.

    Hope those ideas help, or spark something in you that inspires you. I am an email away if you need encouragement, as are many others on this board and elsewhere. Find your resources and refuge, and your power and use them mercilessly.

    I've heard quite a few people say that Chantix was the only thing that worked for them. I'd talk to your doctor about if it's right for you.
  • My Mom & sister got hypnotized and it worked great for them. My Dad quit cold T. after his throat cancer surgery, according to Dr.s no question the nicotine was the cause

    The last year of his life he got to enjoy his meals by pouring them into the tube into his stomach. great weight loss program though, he got down to 90lbs (lost 105 pounds) That's no way to go out. Find a way, Commit to it. Trust me, your family will thank you.
  • Wish I could help...I've smoked for 15 years...quit here and there. The longest I quit for was 5 years. Why the heck would I start again? Ah, a divorce, being a single mom, you name it....theres always an excuse. I seem to associate smoking with being skinny, but now I smoke and am NOT skinny! keep me posted as to how you are doing, any day now I too will quit!

    My husband quit cold turkey when our baby girl, Harley, was born September 3rd. He figured he'd be home with me and Harley for almost 3 weeks and he'd be too busy to miss it. Then by the time he went back to work, the worst of his cravings would be gone. He went back to work yesterday. He drives a lot for work and that's when he used to smoke. But yesterday and today he didn't have a single cigarette. He just chewed about half a pack of gum each day.

    chantix, both DH & i used it for a month and both quit a day apart. best for us we were 2 to 3 packs a day each and both of us for over 30 yrs.
    good luck, makes a big difference in how you feel and look, smell.

    I quit and took up exercise. I quit a few times before then as well. I had to do it when I went on vacation, so I wasn't doing my normal things. I also cut down quite a bit before quitting.

    VERY WELL SAID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :drinker: :drinker: All the aids and resources out there work if you REALLY want to quit. Truly think about all the reasons you want to quit, write them down. Also, write down all the reasons you would not want to quit. Then take a really good look at your list and decide for yourself. I really hope you choose to quit. Then formulate your plan. Did you know that your body gets rid of all the nicotine in 72 hrs??? Your cravings are not really physiological but psychological.

    And yes, I am a former smoker. I have been smoke free for 18 yrs. I used to smoke a pack of cigarettes myself. The longest I quit before was for a little over a year when I found out I was pregnant with my first child, now 23yrs old. I started smoking again when she was about 4 months old. Then I tried to quit about 3 times after that. I also had to quit for 2 mos when I joined the ARMY while in basic trng but started again. What did it finally? When my daughter was 5yrs old and had started in school they talked about cigarettes in school. She told me one day, "yuck mom, you smoke, that is bad for you. Our teacher told us it is bad". So that was it, she gave me that little extra push to finally do it!!!. I quit cold turkey.

    You can do it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Maybe you can start a challenge in this site. Challenges work!!! :flowerforyou: :flowerforyou:
