I don't know if it's important , but I always appear to be going over the protein allowance. Is it a problem?
I do not eat that much meat. I'm under my calories every day, only just mind you!

It's the ratio between protein, carbs and fat I don't seem to be getting right.

Nothing wrong with eating over proteins. The ratio they standard set seems a bit high on carbs and low on proteins to me as it is. If you want you can manually change it under "change goals" -> "Custom" and change the percentage values. See what others have.

Click home... goals... change goals... custom and change the ratios if you want so you're not going over. I had to change mine to 40% carbs, 30% protein and 30% fat to get the protein where I wanted it (0.5 grams per pound of body weight) which I'll increase to 1 gram per pound when I start strength-training again. I feel that MFP's default for protein is way too low at the 15% level

I think you want to make sure you are not going over too much, especially when your not active, or any excess protein could be turned into fat I believe (Think I learned this from 'The Primal Blueprint')

This article (and the primal blueprint) has actually helped me calculate my personal daily protein amount, http://exercise.about.com/cs/nutrition/a/protein_2.htm
    Check it out.

    Good Luck.

if you are exercising a lot then more protein is a good thing. Especially on days you are doing exercise otherwise you body will start to burn muscle rather than fat. from the mouth of my personal trainer last week.

I'm new to this, and I had no idea I could change my goals. I joined 2 weeks ago. How do you know what is right for you?
I'm quite new to dieting too. I've no idea what a good ratio is. I'm not inactive. I live in the countryside so I can walk when ever the mood takes me. I have walked an hour a day since starting this new regime. Not power walking, just enjoying the scenery type of walking. I'm very good food wise, but I hate the gym with a passion.

I am following P90X right now and they give ratios of 50% protein, 30% carbs, and 20% fats. This is known as the Fat Shredder plan and I lost 25lbs in 2 months on it. Now I am on the Energy Booster phase which is 40% Protein, 40% Carbs, and 20% fats. I am still losing with this ratio along with the working out.

My numbers happen to match south beach ratios. (40 carb 30 protein 30 fat)
But that's "all" that matches, I happened to land on them in my attempt to lessen carbs and get protein to the level I wanted (0.5 grams per pound of body weight) I wanted less carbs as they were a big part of my excess calories
