Do you program your pedometer or.....

I am wondering do you program your steps in the pedometer or just use it out of the box? I read the instructions, but am not that digitally apt, so did not do it. I ran tonight with it and was blown away that I only did 3.5 miles. I would have thought I was over 4 easily?
Does it make a difference? I was not too inspired to do it since the instructions said that walking/running had to be switched back and forth. This was a cheapie at $9, so it's certainly nothing high tech!

I don't bother. My mileage is usually a bit low - but the steps are accurate and that is all I really care about. If the mileage is important to you - then by all means program it. But I just use it to get my general activity level so I just don't bother. Like you said, your stride for running and walking is different anyway so it will never be 100 percent accurate.0

mine only measures steps. So, I found my stride length : To measure your stride mark a distance of 50 feet. Now walk this distance and count your steps. Divide 50 by the number of steps and that is your stride length. Now, divide 5280 by your stride length to find your "average steps per mile". Mine's 2.5 ft. Then I found this: http://walking.about.com/library/cal/uccalc3.htm
to calculate my calorie burn. For running you need to measure your running stride the same way. Probably have to do it with more than 50 ft I'd think!0 -

Hmmm, I paid $20 for mine and it doesn't have that option. It does have a 7 day memory, clock, and a sensor that determines if you're really walking or just moving around!0
