Lose 1lb every 7 weeks...?!

According to MFP, my BMR is 1284cals/day. If I let MFP set my goals (which I don’t), it says I should eat 1200cals a day, plus eat back any that I burn off during exercise. Which means that I will only have a deficit of 588cals a week, and so it will take me roughly 7 weeks to lose a pound. I want to lose 25 more pounds, so if I go by what MFP says, I should lose that weight in roughly… 175 weeks, or nearly 3.5 years. Ummm… What? Am I really supposed to listen to this? Is it just me or does that sound ridiculous?

Don't eat all your exercise calories which will give you a boost too. Don't hurt yourself by not eating enough but still, try not eating back all of them.

I'm actually losing weight eating more calories. There are days that I can't get all my calories in but others i get them all in. I have my goal set to 1300 and low carb..... and change it up sometimes. My goal is set between 1300 - 1500 a day.

You just have to play around with it and see what works for you.

    How tall are you?

Anyway, BMR describes only the calories you need to stay alive while in a coma, not what you need everyday you're out of bed and living your life.

I eat at or above (usually by about 300 calories) my BMR everyday and loose weight; its really just a starting point for the larger equation.

    What's your BMR?

1376 is my BMR but I don't always use that. I have found that I started losing weight when I started eating low carb.
  • I thought that at first too, but your BMR is what you'd burn if you were in a coma, you then add your base level of daily exercise (sedentary, light, moderate, etc) which multiplies your BMR by a certain number (e.g. sedentary = BMR x 1.2). If you let MFP set your goals, they'll incorporate your level of activity so your maintenance will probably become 1500-1600 minimum, meaning you can burn 300cals per day, or 2100 per week - well over half a pound :)

I see that your weight is good. You have lost 23 pounds? That is awesome. You must not be very smalll if you really want to get down to 97 pounds.

Think about weight training to add definition instead of working on the number so much. If you are that small, you would look better fit then skinny. Just think about it.

Congrats on your loss!! You should be proud!

I already set my exercise levels...? It still tells me to eat 1200 (but I don't listen anyway so it doesn't really matter, haha)

When you created your account, it asked you to choose an activity level, what you usually do pretty much every day of the week. The calories you need to do that are added to your BMR.
Then when you work out, you log those in, and the calories needed for your body to do that get added to your BMR and your regular activity.

You do have to burn more calories than your eat, but in truth, you burn a good amount of calories every day without realizing it. Then when you work out, it really adds up fast.

MFP will never recommend calories under 1200 since that's the level where an average person could start going into starvation mode if they ate less than that regularly for several months.

How low carb do you eat? I try to keep my carbs under 120g/day.

I keep it at about 100 give or take but most of the carbs come from fruits & veggies except my cereal in the morning. The rest of the day is mostly fruits, veggies and lean protein and I only eat beef once a week if at all. Occasionally I will add a cheat to shake things up. Sometimes you can confuse your body by just eating different foods.

My BMR is 1793, then times it by 1.2 (light activity to be on the safe side) and that equals = 2151 calories per day to maintain my weight, I go lower I lose weight, I go higher I gain weight, simples!
    To lose 1lb a week I need to eat 1651 a day (500 x 7 = 3500, 3,500 calories in 1lb).

A very good link which helps work it all out for you = http://www.webmd.com/diet/calc-bmi-plus
