This is for those of you out there with thyroid problems and who are struggling with weight loss.

*back story* my mother has hoshimotos ( autoimmune disorder that causes a hypo active thyroid) and has trouble with weight because of her thyroid regulating her metabolism* she is concerned about me because i have a mild dime size patch of psoarisis ( also considered autoimmune disorder) on my knee and she was just bit younger than me when she developed it on both her legs (started mild and turned severe). I consider this mild.

She thinks i should have a test done on my thyroid despite not having any other symptoms of a decreased thyroid. I have been having trouble with weightloss but thats because i have been lazy and eating more than i should. i know that if i started working hard again i could do it. ( i think she forgets about all the weight i have lost)

now my question is (finally) do you find that losing weight has improved your thyroid?

edit- the reason i ask is because my mother thinks i should get it checked out but i dont think i have anything to worry about since i am not showing any symptoms and i am losing weight.

I have had a hard time losing weight despite how much I have to lose it has been coming off very very slowly. I have hypothyroidism and am on medication all blood work comes out fine and that the thyroid is normal so there should be no trouble. My doctor said the best he could tell me is to keep moving and will come off. Unfortunately it will be slow. I gained over 60lbs when my thyroid went undiagnosed I just thought it was baby weight I couldn't lose. Another symptom of thyroid issues is a thick neck I know that sounds crazy but when I was 20 a doctor tested my thyroid for that reason. At that time it was normal. Long slender necks do not run in my family

I wish I could answer your question, but I am just now starting my weight loss journey with Hypothyroidism. I was diagnosed about 4 yrs ago and gained about 20-25 lbs. Everything I have ever read, about trying to lose weight w/Hypo, was very discouraging. Made me think that there was no way I could lose with this. But a leaf turned when I was at my last docs. appt. I had never, ever had a problem w/high blood pressure until I was diagnosed and taking Levo. He had mentioned that since I also have family history of HBP, chances are I would have to go and meds as well. UGH! So he told me about this site and I joined that same day. Will losing weight help my thyroid health? I don't know. Will it help me from getting put on HBP medicine? I don't know that either. What I do know is that Im not going down without a fight. Anything is possible, so Im going to try and see what happens. And maybe, at a later date, I can answer your question!!

No it hasn't. I have been taking thyroid meds for 10 years and I have blood test every 90 days and the only I find is that I am tired if it is low. I WISH it helped my weight loss. Low thyroid raises your bad cholestrol, which is good for you! Good luck of your new advernture.

I have hypothyroidism. Getting testing will get you on meds IF they have the disease. I struggled with my weight FOREVER and wish I had known that I had this disease years ago as I struggled through every program & diet imaginable. Losing weight did NOT improve my thyroid though.. My T3 and T4 levels are "the worst I've ever seen." according to my endocrinologist. But losing weight has greatly improved my quality of life. So, in my honest opinion, I would say "get the test". Then, if you have this problem, you can educate yourself. Maybe you are not "lazy". Thats what I thought too. But extreme fatigue is a symptom. Better to know, I say. Good luck on your journey!

The doctors always say that diet and exercise cannot affect your thyroid. However, for the past couple of years my thyroid has been getting progressively slower and slower, and now that I've been eating healthier and being very active, i got checked 4 or 5 months ago and my doctor was astonished to see that for the very first time in two years I did NOT need an increase in medication. I'm finally stabilizing, as is my blood sugar and testosterone. So, perhaps diet and exercise doesn't really do much, but I feel like it does have an affect, even if it's minor. And you can still lose weight with a hypo active thyroid condition, it's just a bit harder. You can do the same activity as someone else your height and age and weight but not lose weight as quickly, but you'll still lose the weight. If you want to lose it faster you need to push yourself a bit harder, but the weight will come off, it's very attainable. Definitely get your thyroid checked if you haven't already, because even if diet and exercise can help improve your thyroid function, it won't be significant, and it won't be enough.
