I've had pretty bad acne since the tender age of puberty. I have really sensitive skin and I'm allergic to benzoyl peroxide (the active ingredient in most acne medications including Proactiv.)
I was wondering if anyone else has experienced a reduction in acne after losing weight and eating healthier. It would be a great motivator to think my problem would be helped.

Acne can actually be greatly effected by diet, I can always tell when I cheated and had chocolate because my skin breaks out. Make sure you are cleansing your skin post workout since sweat clogs your pores, but a good clean (minimal preservatives) diet and weight loss greatly helps skin. And a high water intake!0

I have super sensitive skin and have struggled with acne most of my life as well. I notice that when I drink alot of water my complexion clears, but thats about it. I finally found a skin care line that works for me and keeps me clear. (even through my pregnancy when hormones were at their worst!!) but who knows, maybe it will help. Its possible that certain things in your diet are affecting your complexion as well. Chocolate and dairy make me break out. So do some experimenting!! and good luck :-)0

Sadly, my skin was better when I was 20 lbs thinner!!0

Sorry - I had hellacious acne as a teenager - it runs in the family - but I was really thin, and I didn't eat junk, so that wasn't a factor for me. I started getting twice monthly acne facials in my early 20's and it stopped. Only had to do the facials for a few months. Don't know if it was just good timing (end of puberty) or facials or a little of both... Good luck!0

I found that diet did really affect my acne - salty and processed foods would make it worse, drinking lots of water helps (but the water only helps so much... eating clean is really key). Also, I've recently started using one of those motorized facial cleansing brushes by Oil of Olay and I love it - it gets your skin so much cleaner (I hear the Clarisonic one is even better, but much more expensive). You can use any type of cleanser you want with it.0

I had acne as a teenager and into my thirties. As I've been eating better, it has cleared up. I also found that salmon helps. My son curently has acne and has found that a couple servings of almonds every day has helped. It hasn't cleared them up, but it helps keep them from being so angry looking.0

I think the causes are mostly genetic, although stress, sleep deprivation, and poor nutrition can exacerbate breakouts. I was not overweight and had good nutrition 35 years ago and eliminated my acne by going to a dermatologist and receiving treatment. When my son was a teenager, he must have inherited the same tendency for acne that I had and I took him straight to the dermatologist, too. My son had always eaten healthy food (loves his vegetables and fruits), but still had noticeable acne until it was cleared up with medical intervention.0

I too am allergic to Benzoid Peroxide and I have a LOT of issues with the different soaps, what has helped me SOOOO much is using Olay toner (2-4 bucks per bottle) and use it with exfoliating pads once a day perferably at night, then use a good moisterizing face creme over night. Then ELF zit zapper ($1) daily, sometimes many time during the day. You can find it at Target in the beauty section with the make up. or you can order it online . If you want need to exfoliate really well find a good wash I love olay and apply it to a extra soft spin brush you have to be gentle but it too works.
It takes a few weeks/ months till you become clear faced, but you will love it. I have finally found the solution that worked for me. I hope you can do the same too0 -
Attention acne sufferers:
add omega-3's to your diet. Fish oil or flax oil. I like my Omega 3-6-9 complex from whole foods. Research shows that fish oil/flax oil decreases inflammation and is very beneficial to acne ( and allergies as well). My skin has improved a lot since adding this to my diet. So have my allergies! Another tip while we are at it-Wear a sweat band on your head when you work out-so that the oils from your scalp/hair products don't drip down your face and give you break outs.0 -
My skin is really horrible.. I get cystic acne..
I started mixing 1 cup of coffee grinds (fresh or used) to 1/4 cup (or more) of olive oil or coconut oil..
I use it every 1-2 day as a face scrub! Works wonders! Caffeine is good for your skin and the oils keep it moisturized, i was so surprised when my face cleared up.. i started doing this 6 months ago and my skin is the clearest its ever been. I have tried prescription creams and all kinds of junk that never worked. Not sure if it will help anyone else out, but its worth it to give it a try. i love it!0
