Meditation?

I have read in multiple forums and articles that meditation really helps with weight loss. Have any of y'all tried meditation? How did it work?

  • I've been trying to, although it's difficult with 2 kids (one is 14 months old). It makes sense that it would help with weight loss because it's supposed to calm the mind and help with stress levels. Meditation isn't as easy as it sounds though....I guess that's why they say you "practice" meditation. Good luck! It certainly can't hurt!

I use meditation and yoga all the time and I think it does help in the way that it makes me more aware of my body and I know when I am actually hungry and what I should put in my mouth and what I should stay from.

    Thats so the truth!
I am trying to incorporate meditation in my life, not just for weightloss though. I'm totally a beginner. One thing I've been trying is guided meditation. A friend of mine gave me some of her stuff to try. I've been enjoying it. The hard part is finding the time to squeeze it in!

I dont think I "meditate" per se, I do what I call centering myself. when things get crazy or out of hand, I try to find a quiet spot and calm my mind, my breathing ect. I dont know if it help wt loss, but it definitely helps ME!! with my day to day stuff and if I work it right it does help with some of the stress eating.

I used to practice meditation but haven't in a long while. I really should give it a try for weight loss, I don't know if it will work but I do know it helps with stress and well being...It couldn't hurt to try and you would gain some peace and quiet time at the least.

I meditate often while I am praying. I focus on a scripture verse or an aspect of the Lord or sometimes just enjoy his presence. Sometimes it will lead into prayer, sometimes it doesn't. I don't know if it helps you lose weight, but I know I feel better once I have spent some time with God.
For example, I was praying about my weight and to make me realize when I am eating just to eat. All of a sudden, the first commandment pops in my head "I am the Lord your God. Honor no other gods but Me." I may have screwed the words up a bit. As I meditated on it, I realized that God wasn't talking just about other gods, but about things that we try to exalt above him. This can include money, fame, and I think even food. I feel that God spoke to my heart and was telling me that food has no power over me and that I choose what I eat and it is my responsibility to eat healthy. If I eat just to eat, it is my own fault.
Whatever you choose to do, I hope it will work out for you :flowerforyou:

Meditation has defintely helped me personally and with weight loss. As drmomm describes it is about centering and calming the 'monkey mind'.

I've both used dance and walking forms of meditation. sitting still is harder for me but obviously zillions do it daily.

Find a calming phrase - one that means something to you...."all is well and happy", "my body and spirit are nourished with love and light", "my stomach is full, my mind is calm, I am taking care of me with joy". Are some examples that I can think of off the top of my head.

Get in a quiet place if you can - but hey I can do this around my teens! Or walk, or dance to whatever music soothes you. or stretch....

And then repeat (called 'chanting') this phrase over and over. When ever a distracting thought comes up about kids, work, etc. Notice it let go and continue to repeat phrase.

Really in the end, alot of our bad eating habits are related to a frantic, sad, depressed or out of balance mood. Meditation is a way of bringing the balance back.

It is well worth the effort to be sure. :flowerforyou:
  • Thanks! I think i'll start practicing meditation. Even if it doesn't help with weight loss I will be less stressed and calmer, so it's a win-win.

I don't know much about meditation, but I recently started yoga and have noticed a huge difference. My body feels amazing, and I feel so much calmer! I can't go a day without it now because it feels so darn good!

Helps me be more focused but I do not equate any of my weight loss to Meditation.
