Exercise calories

So... I am a newbie so not sure if this was explained somewhere so excuse my ignorance. Are you suppose to eat all your calories burned when you exercise. I average about 600 exercise calories and I have not been adding the extra food. Am I hurting myself or am I okay? I did lose 6 pounds this first week and I almost always get that little "you are eating too few calories" message. Any advice?
