If not the track, then where?

Ok, so a while back, I was going to the track on a regular basis but when I'd run, I got bad shin splints. So I would let my legs heal and when I was comfortable, I would go to the track and walk, no jogging or running. But I'd leave in pain.
At work, I have a long (long, long) hallway I walk several times a week and I keep the pace up (heart rate is up like when I'm walking the track) but I walk this stretch in heels. My shins never bother me!
When we go to the park and walk the trails, with all of the uneven land, hills, roots and sand, my shins don't bother me!
Could it be the track??? That would be ashame cause it's a brand new surface. I just think it's weird! Anyone else not able to walk the track?

I can't run outside at all and actually have issues with shin pain when I "mall walk" outside. I think it's because the surface doesn't give it at all - so your body is taking the shock of it. I run on a treadmill with a shock absorbent base and never have any issues. Yes, treadmill running is BOOORING but it doesn't cause me any pain.0

Well, the ups and downs of trails (or heels) cause us to hit the ground with a different part of our foot. More than likely when you're running on flat surfaces you aren't coming down where you are supposed to. I get shin splints too, still haven't figured out how to prevent them fully myself, but they're not as bad as when I was younger. You should be able to find info on proper running form online...if I find anything I will let you know! I can't promise I will remember to look it up right away though! Also, my friend's husband used to get shin splints and has virtually eliminated them by running in Vibram Five Fingers running shoes.0

Are you stretching before you walk? My daughter gets shin splints if she doesn't stretch good. Also are you wearing a good pair of running shoes this will make a difference also.0

Hmmmm. Are you wearing the same shoes as when you hike? I would get fitted for running shoes or as mbcarreno suggested get your gait and stride evaluated.0

I bought some calf compression sleeves because I hurt my shins when I decided it was smart to tag along with my dog and try to run as fast as she did... can anyone say dumb? Yeah! They are truly amazing, much less pain.0
