Wedding motivation

I'd like to share a chain of thoughts I had today...

Why is it that couples only decide to get "healthy" before they get married? Is it the photo's that they have to take during the wedding? Is it the "most important day of my life" factor? For women, is it fitting into the dress they want? For men, is it just because their women are doing it?

Its almost tradition for a couple to go on a huge binge weight loss before the big day. I first started thinking about how many posters on MFP that have weddings coming up. Then it got me thinking about what the motivation of losing weight for the big day is. Now I am thinking there has to be a way to mimic that motivation.

Ideas:
1. mimic the idea of a "the big day" scheduling a big photo shoot yearly (Xmas cards, family albums, etc...)
2. mimic the idea of a "the big day" by finding an article of clothing you'd really like to get an look good in and train for it
3. mimic the idea of a "the big day" by planning a "honeymoon" every year so that you have to look good nekkid.

When I started thinking of ideas to "mimic" I started to see a pattern. The motivation comes from a significant financial investment that involves your body image. This is difficult to grasp as I have been raised to do that opposite,

I was raised to : set a goal - reach it - reward it
Theoretical way: set a goal - reward it - do what it takes to reach it

Both are good approaches but time after time I have failed in more than just weight loss doing the prior because you get to a point where you say "Meh, do I really need the reward?" to justify your failure. There is nothing on the line to keep you hooked.

This leads me to believe that the driving motivation is fear. Fear of losing your investment or fear of looking silly at (in,with, etc) your investment. I'd rather not get into whether or not fear is a healthy motivation because at this point we are all on this site and we will take what motivation we can get.

Just my two cents, thanks for reading. I'd love to hear your thoughts.

p.s. I am not a writer so please be gentle and forgive my grammar
