Non-dairy milk and cereal

Lately I've been attempting to switch to a non-dairy milk with my morning cereal but I'm finding that I'm really struggling with this. I don't like care for the consistency or flavor of the non-dairy milks when combined the cereal. On its own, I like non dairy milks... but with cereal not so much.

Any suggestions? I've tried soy milk and now almond milk.

I've become lactose intolerant in the last year and still don't care for cereal with milk (yep, just does not seem right). I prefer almond out of all the choices but still only use it for cooking and my daily coffee. I eat my cereal dry.

Have you tried soy with vanilla ? The brand Edensoy do a rice and soy milk mix which I think is yum, but it all comes down to personal taste. There are so many different brands out there, you just have to try them all until you find the one/s you really like.

    Why are you switching?

I switched because I am lactose intolerant and the way that milk makes me feel is not worth it--but then I never really liked milk in the first place. I also don't eat cereal very often because most of them are loaded with simple carbs and sugars. But, sometimes I will allow myself a bowl of shredded wheat (unsweetened, of course) with banana or blueberries and a sprinkle of stevia.

So, to make the switch, I'd suggest one of two things. 1. Go without cereal/milk of any kind for two weeks then try your non-dairy milk (I like Almond, Hazelnut, or Coconut but not Soy). Or 2. try it the same way nutritionists recommend that people get used to a lower fat milk. Mix it half and half with normal milk and just keep increasing the amount of non-dairy milk until you've made the switch.

One thing to note, however, if you are watching sugars, you'll want to read the label for your non-dairy milk. A lot of them have sugar of some kind added.

Hi there, the only really good one, IMO, is So Delicious Coconut milk, or Silk Coconut milk. Delicious with cereal!!
  • I'm not really lactose intolerant... at least the only time i notice any averse affects from dairy is if I eat ice cream.

I'm trying to make the switch for the savings in calories and some of the things that I've read/heard about milk and antibiotic use with cows and such.

I do Silk Almond unsweetened (35 cal/serving!). I find it's quite a bit thicker than the skim I used to drink, but eventually I've gotten used to the texture.

I typically do unsweetened regular almond milk or unsweetened vanilla soymilk (West Soy is my favorite right now). It is never going to be as tasty and creamy as regular milk in cereal in my opinion but it does the job okay and you'll get used to it!
