something I found on my work's health talk site:

Vegetables or fruit is about the size of your fist.
Pasta should be equal to one scoop of ice cream
Meat, fish, or poultry should be the size of a deck of cards
Snacks, such as pretzels and chips, should be the size of a cupped handful
Apple the size of a baseball
Potato the size of a computer mouse
Bagel the size of a hockey puck
Pancake the size of a compact disc
Steamed rice the size of a cupcake wrapper
Cheese the size of a pair of dice or the size of your whole thumb

  • Thanks for this! I spend so much time wondering what 5oz is or what one serving is

That's really useful. Now I just need a guide to the size of a hockey puck - is it the size of an apple?

I was just getting ready to ask that! Figured I'd sound kinda silly but hey, the only hockey puck I've ever seen was on tv! Looked about the size of a Hostess DingDong!!!

Buying a kitchen scale and using it really helps you to learn what a portion/serving looks like. It's better, in my opinion, than measuring volume. You begin to be able to "eyeball" a proper portion size really easily.

I recommend getting a decent digital food scale. Sometimes my estimations are way off, even when I have that neat little cheat sheet from above. I was a little annoyed when I saw that my chicken breasts were actually closer to 9 ounces than the 5 or 6 I thought I was eating.

Yes but not everyone eats the recommended portion or has to. If I were to only eat a deck of cards' sized chicken breast...I'd never get the protein I need. Sorry...recommended meat is about 3 oz and I eat 4-6.
