I was previously using sparkpeople as my calorie counter website and it gave me a limit of 1,200-1,500 calories a day. I just joined fitnesspal today and it told me 2,000!!! what gives?

    Wow 2,000 seems like a lot. I'm at 1200.

I was surprised with the amount it gives me too (1540) - I tried to keep it at 1200 for the first two weeks and lost nothing, so I upped it to what it told me and have now lost 3.3kgs (7lbs). Eat your calories - trying to keep within macros for sodium, fat, and carbs (protein doesn't matter so much if you go over). Exercise regularly. You'll be astounded!!

I think it depends on the goals you set for yourself. I originally set my goals up to lose 2 lbs a week, and my cals are set at 1200/day

Did you put in your profile you are very active? Most people on here that I have seen have 1200 as there calorie in take.

Check your settings. it doesn't right to me, unless you are trying to get to my weight.... 235.

A 2k cal diet is too much for me. Yes I think they should work on this a bit. Follow your gut feelings. I mean if your not hungry and under the limit don't eat.

I'd also check that you've set your activity level to what it is WITHOUT exercise. That is, your day to day job - especially if you're logging your exercise and trying to eat back the calories burned. If you've set it too high, that may be where the extra calorie allowance is coming from.

Yup and if you are really heavy the number is ginormous.! If you google other BMI calculators you get the same numbers. In fact I looked at one that gave me twice the amount MFP does.

Your age, height, weight, and activity level all play into this calculation.

I am 5'11'' and weigh 220 lbs. My daily intake is suggested at 1510. I checked out other websites and most recommended 1760 but that just seemed too high. I have been going with 1510 and have lost weight, so I believe its pretty accurate. Plus if you exercise and eat back some of those calories then you will find its not that hard to reach 2000. I would just try different numbers and see what works best for you.

Make sure you double check your height and measurements.

I work out 6 days each week, for over an hour each time. It allowed me 1440 calories, I believe. But I didn't see many results. I changed my profile to "sedentary" it allowed more like 1280. I've lost 3 lbs in 3 weeks. I go by the 1280 [not, say, 1780 if I burn 500 calories]. I've seen other sites that allow more, too. But this is what works for me. I get plenty of vegetables, protein, calciu, etc. and am never hungry. Of course, if I felt I needed something/ was really hungry, I would eat some of the exercise calories back. But at this point, I haven't felt a valid need to.

    Hope this helps.

PS 2000 seems like a very high amount if you are not bodybuildingl, burning off mega calories daily, and in maintenance mode.

MFP gives me a calorie goal of 1800. Personally, I KNOW that is too low for me - so I adjusted it. Weight loss isn't a one size fits all kind of thing - which is why this site is GREAT, BUT you have to adjust so it works with your body. If you think it is too much and you aren't losing weight, try lowering it.

I average between 2200-2500 net calories in a day.
