Hypoglycemia and Hypothyroidism?

Hello everyone!
I have hypothyroidism (diagnosed last August), and I've been having really bad bouts of hypogylcemia for a while. I've always been a little bit more sensitive when it's come to my blood sugar, but it's continuing to get worse. I have to eat every 3-4 hours, otherwise I get so incredibly grumpy, and lately I've been getting a little confused if I can't eat in time. I wake up in the middle of the night several times a week DRENCHED in sweat. It's horrible... I have to pretty much design my life around it as it's beginning to become more and more of a burden. As far as I know, I'm not a diabetic. I'm really not overweight, and I haven't had any other symptoms of diabetes... so I don't think that's an issue. (I am getting tested though next week, just to be safe and be able to cross that off the list)
I've been limiting myself to 2 fruits a day, because I noticed my blood sugar would spike and then drop (i don't test myself... but i can just feel it) if I ate, say, a banana by itself. Any fruit I eat, I pair it with a protein as a sort of buffer. I also really don't eat that many sweets, aside from a piece or two of dark chocolate here and there.
If anyone's out there who's in a similar situation and has tried anything that's worked, PLEASE let me know! I really appreciate it!

Hi, I can't really answer your question about hypoglycemia.
I have hypothyroidism as well, and the times I've woken up drenched in sweat have been the times I've needed to change the T4 dosage. And then, the night sweating went away. It's a good thing you're getting tested next week, maybe all you need is to change the dose.
I hope others can be more helpful. Good luck!0 -
Hi
I was diagnosed with serious gestational diabetes and can honestly say your symptoms did mirror how I felt at that time. The sugars come from the type of carbohydrates you are eating - the sugar in fruit is a different kind of sugar and this shouldn't cause the dips in energy - I was advised to snack on fruit and yoghurt as the type of insulin I was given covered meal times only. The key is really to look at your diet as a whole and look at GI diet for inspiration as its the complex carbs mixed with lean proteins that keep you full for longer, regulate your sugar control and prevent the dips.

I have hypothyroidism (diagnosed 2003) and have suffered with a many of the symptoms that you are speaking of. I was hypoglycemic when I was pregnant but haven't had to deal with it much since having my son. All I can tell you is that it will get better with time. Most people think it only takes a short few months but for some it can take years. As for your night sweats, that does resemble diabetes. I have only gotten them a few times and that was telling me I needed a modification in my medication. Just make sure that you keep it monitored closely so that it doesn't get out of control. Living with this can be difficult at times but with the proper doses of your medication, you will see some relief.0

Thank you so much everyone!
Looks like it's a really good thing I'm getting blood drawn next week. Hopefully you all are right and it will get better with time. Having to wash my sheets 3 or so times a week is getting old! haha0 -
Even if you do not end up having diabetes and are instead still hypoglycemic do know hypoglycemia can be just as dangerous as diabetes. So if the tests come back negative for diabetes be sure to talk with your doctor about your symptoms and how to better manage your hypoglycemia. It's not something to take lightly. I've had it for years though it's waning now that I've cut out my multiple food intolerances that I've discovered for myself in the last year. My night sweats have also reduced and my husband can cuddle with me at night again.
So have your digestive enzymes checked as well just in case.
Good luck and I hope you find some solid solutions!0
