You might at first as you gain muscle mass, but as long as you burn more calories than you eat you will lose weight. So, exercising means you can eat more- which I think is great because I really like food. It's easy for me to exercise if I know that I have to in order to be able to eat the foods I love. Like going to work. Hopefully, you find a job that you like. But even in the best job in the world, you will hate it some days or you will just plain not have the energy to go. On those days I find it motivating to think about the money!
Back on subject, a special bonus of building muscle is that muscle will burn fat just by existing! It takes energy to maintain muscle, so your metabolism will increase the more muscle you have.
It's especially important for people losing weight to exercise because any time you lose weight you're likely to lose muscle, too. Which is sad. Since your body is getting lighter, your muscles are getting used less during daily activity. Your body doesn't prioritize their maintenance quite as well, and when you need energy it's a good candidate for catabolism. And your heart isn't immune from this process!
A pound of muscle is only "worth" 600 calories, while a pound of fat is 3500 calories! So if you lose weight quickly, odds are more of it is muscle than you'd probably like, which will lead to a plateau.
Basically, I'm saying that exercising is essential to weight loss. Not just because you get to eat more food, but also because if you don't you'll plateau early and have a hard time getting the last of the pounds to shed. And you need to exercise just to keep the muscle you already have from disappearing. Sure, it might mean you lose weight less quickly, especially at first- but you'll lose inches a LOT faster. And isn't that what we're all really after, anyway?0
