Running is primarily a cardio exercise. To increase strength, "tone core", etc, you need to do resistance exercises. Google various combinations of "core exercises" and you will come up with dozens of ideas you can do --many of which require little or no equipment.0

Azdak said it perfectly. Keep in mind that 'toning' is nothing more than removing the fat layer above the muscle layer so you can see definition. To do this you need to do 2 things- lose fat and gain muscle. For all intents and purposes, you cannot pick where you lose fat, so any cardio exercise is as good as another. However, you CAN choose where you build muscle. So pick core strengthening exercises along with a healthy and regular cardio regimen if you want 'tone.'0
