Okay, so I decided today to sign up for a half marathon. I is the Rock n Roll Marathon series and they are coming to Savannah, this year. It is like a big deal, from my understanding. Anyway, I am on Week 7 of the C25k program and I have been racking up anywhere from 6-7 miles a day walking and running. What do you guys think? Can I do it? Any pointers or suggestions from people that are experienced? Anything?

If you're doing 6-7 miles a day then you should totally be able to do it!! How long until the race? I'm doing the Rock and Roll half marathon in Denver, but it's not until October... I've got lots of time to train.

The course time limit here for the HM is 4 hours, so even if you walked the whole thing, as long as you walked 3.5 miles/hour or faster, you'd be fine.

Personally my recommendation is that you come up with a realistic plan for you to follow between now and the race. When I don't put a plan in place and stick to it, then race day arrives and I find I'm unprepared. There are plenty of walk/run half marathon training plans out there online if you google for them.

    Hi there!

I just completed my second 10K (all walking) and improved my time. I also just registered to do the same race next year, but this time the half marathon, and my goal is, in the next year to build up some running as well, though I will NOT be running the whole thing, and I'm not even sure I will be able to run half of it, but I have a year to build up to it. That being said, I actually found this second 10K to be easy, especially since I slowed my pace to walk with a slower walker. A half marathon will be a little more than double the 10K and it is a big deal. I think you can do it, but it will require constant increase in distance and speed. Every week I would increase your miles and/or your speed, and make sure you build up to more than the 13+ miles that are in a half marathon.

you can absolutely do it! you've got plenty of time to train and be ready. I'd suggest doing some shorter runs in the meantime if you can on weekends and find a training schedule that works for you (there are lots out there - C25K has progressively larger training plans, Hal Higdon, Runner's World, etc...). you'll just want to start doing a series of progressively longer runs leading up to it. I've walked 2 already this year and am running a half in September.

You can do it, just start running more.

DH & I are planning a half marathon in January because we need more time to train and prep.

Great job!! You can absolutely do it! I've done two and am starting training for my third on Monday. My biggest suggestion is research half marathon training plans online - there are a TON of them. They have ones for beginners, intermediate, and advanced so you can pick whichever one you're comfortable with. Once you pick a plan, stick to it - it'll be your biggest help to stay on track. Typical training plans are around 18 weeks. The Savannah R&R is in November, right?? If so, you should have a few weeks at least to find a training plan and know when to start. I could go on and on...so feel free to friend me if you need some more information or want some support along the way!!

Thanks everyone for your comments and suggestions. I was wondering can I do it, but after reading all of your post, I feel, I know can do this. Now, I really have something to work really hard for, to finish and to finish with a good time. I will probably burst into tears to BeerRunner. Thanks again everyone :flowerforyou:

I know it sounds cliche but it's true when they say "you can do anything you put your mind to". Running is 80% mental. It's a mind game. If you can do the necesssary training, and get your head right, you can definitely do it. Will it be challenging? of course! as it should be! You WANT to be challenged. Challenging does not mean impossible. It can be done :)) You have 4.5 months to train, go hard after it girl & really want it!! Just remember, it's about finishing, not competing. Keep us updated with your training :))

you can do it! i just walked a half-marathon june 5. my original plan was to run it, but i had surgery in the beginning of april and that put a damper on my training schedule. i walked it in 3 hours and 31 minutes or 16 minute miles. i could have run some of it but i was enjoying the course and talking with friends. :) it was fun. you can totally train for a half marathon in 4 1/2 months! good luck!
