I think high impact would include jumping type moves, and would be fast paced.

I asked this of the trainers at my gym a while ago and was told the 'rule of thumb' is that if both feet are off the ground at the same time, it's high impact (running, jumping rope, jumping jacks, jump training, etc.) whereas an activity where one foot is always on the ground would be low(er) impact (walking, elliptical, etc.). Also, the amount of jarring the joints are having to absorb.

Now I said "low(er)" because I use the elliptical a lot and given that the last time I did it I burned almost as many calories as I do running, so in my mind, that is a higher impact workout. The same could probably be said for step aerobics, kickboxing or regular boxing. One foot is pretty much always on the ground, but man can those activities feel VERY high impact! :)
