Why do some people have 1600 cals a day & others have 1200?

How does this site determine how many daily calories each person should have?
I have some friends who are allowed over 1600 & I was set to only have 1280. Not that I'm complaining, just curious :)

When you selected the rate at which you wish to lose weight, it is picked for you. (1lb a week, 2lbs a week, so on)

MFP bases it on your height, weight and how many pounds per week you want to lose. 1200 calories per day is the minimum.

    Good luck on your journey!

The more you weigh, the higher your BMR. My calories are over 2000, but I weigh 350 pounds.

It all depends on your weight, activity level and the personal goals you set.

I'm 5'9" and have decided to only try to lose a 1/2 pound each week. MFP initially set me at 1770, but when I revised my target calories after I lost 18 pounds, it bumped me down to 1720 calories a day.

It depends on your current weight, activity level and how much you want to lose per week.

I'm at 1500 to lose about half pound a week. I'm "lightly active" so I don't count normal activity as exercise.
  • good job on your weight loss progress! :)

You can change it if you want in the tools or settings section if you want. (I can't remember which one)

There have been studies that show the more slowly you lose weight, the more likely you are to keep it off. Plus if you're working out, even if you only lose 2 lbs/week (or even less), you'll start looking amazing. Good luck!
