Considering purchase of a rowing machine-air vs magnetic

Does anyone out there have enough knowledge about rowing for fitness purposes and the related equipment to speak with authority about pertinent differences between air resistance and magnetic resistance rowing machines? Let me preface my question with some facts:
1. I am not going to spend very much money. I realize that I will not get the nicest piece of equipment, but that's just the reality. I'm probably not going to spend more than 400 bucks. There are many rowers in that price range available online with decent reviews.
2. I am looking for something with a "flywheel" (don't know any better way to put it) sort of system, where I can build momentum and then maintain it instead of each pull offering a specific set resistance. I've used these in gyms before and prefer them substantially over the alternative. I know that air resistance machines work in this fashion. I can't seem to find out if that is the case with magnetics.
3. Compact size and portability are huge factors. I am going to roll this thing out into the living room and set it up and use it for short periods of time after the kids are in bed and I am winding down with my wife in the evening, and then it will get packed back up and put away again before I crash myself. So I need something little, with the ability to get littler, preferably.
