Silk vs. Almond Milk vs. 1% Milk, for a Woman

I've heard a lot lately about soy milk and how soy isn't that great for a woman. I've also heard a lot of people having almond milk...I drink 1% or skim normally....Can anyone tell me what would be better to have? What's the deal with almond milk??? I'm not lactose intolerant or anything, but I'd love to try it if it's got a health benefit or something

Almond milk (unsweetened) is really great - low in calories and sugar and very creamy.0

I'm not sure there are really any health benefits. A lot of people drink it thinking there is going to be a really good amount of protein or something but there isn't. I drink it just because I'm avoiding milk at the moment. However, if you want to avoid soy and you want a low calorie alternative to regular old dairy, I'd try the unsweetened vanilla almond milk. There is no sugar, but there is some vanilla extract so it has a slightly more pleasant taste! I love it with my granola and oatmeal in the morning.0

some of the other milks have more protein and less carbs
I personally love Valio from Real Goodness it is lactose free and even though I don't have a lactose problem I buy it because it tastes the best to me even when I drink it straight and not as part of a recipe or smoothie. Oh you can also get it in 1% or 2% just like regular milk too so it's not biggie there.
I think so far I have found it also the lowest in carbs for me at 7 carbs a cup and some others are like 12 or 13 carbs and that is what I am watching right now....all the excess that can go does so I can eat healthier.
I don't do soy, I know the jury is still out if it is healthy or not, but I don't bother with it.0 -
I drink the unsweetened Almond milk made by Silk. I'm just afraid of too much processed soy and I don't do sugar much anymore because I'm cutting carbs... so, the Almond milk is perfect. I don't drink milk at all. But I do use a Tablespoon of half & half in my morning cup of coffee.0

I don't like milk... blah!... but milk is very good for a woman at any time of her life, so I try to drink it. I have recently found that if I take a couple drops of almond extract and half a packet of truvia and add that to 8 oz. of milk with a bit of ice, I've got a really great tasting drink that I know is good for me.
I also use milk in my quiche that I make each week for a great filling breakfast, so I don't want to buy Silk or Almond Milk and only have that as a choice to add to other recipes.
Try this if you're interested in keeping the health benefits of milk but unsure of the other products.0 -
I had to turn away from milk after developing some issues w/ lactose intolerance (not 100% - I can have most cheese, half and half, ice cream; but sour cream/ milk/ too much of something in one day will get me). Soy milk tastes awful, IMO, and Silk Soy Milk has a TON of sugar. Rice milk is OK - vanilla flavored - if you want to make a cappuccino or something. I have found the best alternative in taste to be almond milk, and I prefer the unsweetened plain. It is most like milk for use in cereal, recipes (you can't make jello instant pudding out of it though).
I like the Diamond Almond brand quite well but have recently switched to Silk Almond Milk as they have it at Costco now for a better price. It is creamy & better than Diamond, IMO. My doctors have told me to avoid soy milk - too much soy is bad for women.0 -
I tried the almond milk unsweetened. I didn't like it, it was to thick... back to my unsweetened soy milk. Almond milk has low calories and low carbs.0

What she said. I add Splenda and it tastes like a decadent treat. YUM!0 -
I've been drinking unsweetened soy milk, as a replacement for regular skim milk. I like it much better (I find it tastier and creamier!) but I hadn't heard that soy milk is bad for a woman? I almost bought some almond milk last night but it had a ton of sugar and hardly any protein! So I decided to stick with the soy.0

I switched to Almond milk strictly because its lower calorie than 1-2% milk, but tastes better than skim. The only thing I really use it for though, is to mix with my carnation instant breakfasts when I need a low calorie, highly nutritious snack0

I think the basis behind almond mil is you can get lower calories and sugar with just as much calcium as milk. It IS thick, I use unsweetened with my cereal or in eggs etc but I can't drink it plain. I think that it just takes some getting used too! It really doesn't have a flavor except a slightly almond after taste, and I mean SLIGHT! I would say overall, I'm happy I made the switch and I think I'll stick with it!0

I switch back and forth between vanilla light soy milk and almond milk. The almond milk has fewer calories (you mean I can drink a whole cup for 60 calories?!?! Deal!), but the soy milk has more protein (which I try to get more of). The soy milk I find a bit sweeter so I use it in lattes and cereal, and the almond milk is still sweet but not quite as much, so I can use it in some savoury recipes.0

This sounds weird, but I like to make my own almond milk. I just blanch raw almonds in water, blend them with water in the blender, then strain it through cheesecloth. I add a little agave necter or maple syrup, and some vanilla, and use it in my coffee. There are recipes online.
But i agree with others that the unsweetened almond milk is probably next best. We don't actually absorb a lot of the calcium in milk and I think its better to get it through leafy greens, and there are questions about the healthiness of soy. (However, don't forget, the dairy and meat industry have a huge motivation to turn consumers off soy, so I'd take the information out there with a grain of salt. ) Moderation is probably key and whichever you choose, just don't overdo it, and you'll be fine! They all have protein and calcium, it probably comes down to personal choice.0 -
I make my own almond milk too as I like to control what goes init to make it sweet and how sweet. I like it,sometimes I use stevia or organic honey add cinnomon ....strain I also make my own rice milk too.0

I don't know about health wise but I think almond defiantly tastes better (mostly use it for cereal) and I can't stand cows milk now at all. I actually have to ask my husband if the milk is still good each time I use it in cooking because it even smells gross to me.0

I like unsweetened almond milk (the other kinds tend to have too much added sugar). Regular milk makes me sick and soy milk makes my roomie sick (not to mention the hormone things) so unsweetened almond it is (35 calories a serving! WOOOO!)0

I like skim milk. I tried light vanilla Silk and it was okay. The light chocaolate Silk was just weird. I am not buying that one again. I haven't tried the almond though. Sp does the soy or almond have as much calcium as milk? I haven't read the labels...0
