Tricks to speed you up or keep you going

In college I made myself walk faster by playing this game:

You start on 0 points.
Every time you pass someone you gain a point.
Every time someone passes you, you lose a point.

It kept me going faster and faster, but unfortunately only works in towns.

What tricks do you have to get yourself moving faster or for longer?

    I like that!! =)
  • Girl Talk music has been such a savior during my workouts on the elliptical! The new(ish) album is full of long songs, at least 5 minutes but most above 6. If I'm almost done with my hard interval, I'll want to keep going hard because of the song and if I'm almost done with my whole workout, I'll extend it so I can finish the song before my cool down. Great topic!

I throw a towel over the treadmill or stairmaster information board so I don't see what's going on.

Yeah, for me it's only problem if the gym is showing NASCAR, Golf, or something... then it becomes a very long cardio session.

I absolutely love the app Fit Radio! The music has a high BPM count which makes it easier to keep a higher pace.

Definitely check it out if you're looking for good workout music.

    Any more tips?

One thought that's working for me at the moment is:

'If jillian can kick my butt for 20 minutes, surely I can do it for 10!'

And yesterday, when my arms ached piggy backing my son:

'i'm working the small muscles in with the big ones.'

It's like I've created my own, internal Jillian!

I love working out to Girl Talk as well, I'm bouncing off the ceiling for my favourite parts.

Heart Rate Monitor works the best for me, there is no hiding place if your heart rate isn't in it's target zone. When mine isn't high enough I just start cussing myself.

I set myself targets on RunKeeper too... Eg, can I get to an average speed of 4 mph, then 4.5 when I've done it, then 5 etc.

    i have a couple:

if i'm at the gym, i usually challenge myself to go faster than the person next to me. i will change my music to speed up too.

if i'm outside, i tell myself "if you make your loop in x amount of minutes you get to do _____ when you get home" (read a magazine instead of doing laundry, or take a bubble bath or something). thats usually good motivation for me.
