The many faces of food. Which one do you look at?:)

Saw a program the other day (X-weighted, a fabulous program us Canadians get to watch) and it got me thinking about the many faces of food. So I wondered, which face do you see when you look at or think about food:
- The 'I will be your entertainment for the night" face. Need some excitement, some spice? Well let me be the food for you!
- The " I will get you out of your boredom right now" face. Feeling uninspired, need some boredom relief? Come find me in the kitchen cupboards, munch on me and your boredom will fly away!
-The, I want to be your reward, you worked so hard, you earned me" face. Come on, you have been so good, denied yourself. surely I can be that reward for you!
The " I will be your friend, when no one else cares about you I will be there for you" face. Feeling blue, down, hard day at work, kids not listening, bosses being jerks, friends, or spouses ignoring you? Well, I, your food, will be there for you!
The " I can get you numb and into a stupor" face. Feeling overwhelmed, emotions running high, cannot face the day.. I will help to make it all go away Let me be the food for you!
Sadly of course, many of these faces (the ways we view food) are of no real use to us and even harm our bodies in so many ways. Food is meant to have one face (And looked at properly can be very attractive to boot:
The I will be the fuel for you to keep your strong and healthy" face. You have used up some vitamins, minerals, need to repair some damaged tissue.. Well pls eat me b/c I am loaded with the good stuff, rich in vitamins, good fats, proteins, complex carbs.. all the stuff you need and dang it I can be tasty too!.
I myself have encountered all these faces of food myself and only lately have begun to understand that only the very last one counts. Once I understood that food is fuel and nothing more it is so very much easier to say no to some food and yes to the ones that mean its true purpose of being fuel to keep our bodies running at peak performance.
And yes, I realize I come across per chance as somewhat sanctimonious but sometimes looking at an old familiar friend (like a slice of hot pizza, a dripping burger, a caramel cheesecake slice, buttered popcorn, etc) and asking the right question (Will you be good fuel for me?) rather than giving it special status for the wrong reasons is important to lead a healthier life. Sometimes foods, like people, can be very false friends. Time to find some better ones.
Be well.

Very cool post! It's amazing that food can own us, lol! I can really relate to each one of those. It's hard to say no when the food is beckoning but it's not impossible0

Switch out "food" with "wine"... and sadly, it resonates for me all too well But since wine is not much more than liquid sugar... I guess you could say I have somewhat of a sugar addiction that comes with a very high price tag (in more ways than one).0

Food has been ALL these faces for me in the past. I swear I've been married to food most of my life. Recently we divorced and it was tough at first. Since the split, we now have a balanced relationship. I do sometimes miss "her" company.:blushing:0

Gary, you made me smile, nice analogy. Sometimes a divorce is the only thing that can save us. Well put:)0 -
Thanks. I've always had a love hate relationship with food.0

LOVE that show, I put it on every morning until the kids get up and demand cartoon. Even the re-runs are good.0
