MPH on an elliptical?

Obviously the MPH on a treadmill make sense... and even MPH on a stationary bike make sense (assuming being in a particular gear the whole time). But what does MPH on an elliptical mean? There's no elliptical vehicle that this equates to, right? Are they giving speed as though it's a bicycle maybe?
Anyway, just a curiosity!
