Hi guys

Not logged in for a while - but am back on the diet/fitness thing and have a question about BMR. I calculated my BMR online today and it worked out at 1394, although I'm not sure how BMR works in relation to BMI and how this will affect my weight loss goals... it's confusing!

I'm going to try a low carb diet as I can't seem to shift my weight at the moment.

Help!

H :)

BMR is basal metabolic rate (the rate at which you use energy for basic functions like breathing, circulation, etc - as if you were in a coma)

BMI is body mass index, a very general measurement of body size in relation to height - it can be used as a loose guide for weight

    Might help to read these:

just a little suggestion from much experience "dieting," the outcome may not be what you want unless you are actually ready to give up carbs for the rest of your life. Since diets are temporary changes, the weight normally comes right back once you are done dieting. I would suggest a healthy lifestyle change, incorporating as much exercise as you think you can handle, have time for, or can do physically. I speak from experience of trying fad diets. I have lost 45.5 lbs and I eat carbs daily. Mostly complex carbs like whole grain rice, whole wheat pasta, potatoes even. Good luck on your journey!! :)

    wow great going rfcollins!

Yeah I'm just getting the motivation to get myself back into regular exercise... I guess as I've moved countries and don't really know anyone yet it's hard for me to motivate myself. I have free gym access where I live so I really do need to use that! I'm just usually at a loss for what to actually DO in the gym!

I agree with rfcollins; many sources out there that state fad diets are exactly that: fads. I've lost over 30 pounds just watching my calories. The only people I see messin around with carbs are bodybuilders. All you should have to worry about is putting good, quality, fulfilling calories in your stomach and stick to your goals!

The online BMR calculators are not that accurate because they dont take into account muscle mass vs. fat mass. The best thing to do is to go to professional and do a real BMR test where you breathe into this little machine. I dont know to much about it but I know my BMR was a lot higher on the machine then the calculator.

As far as low carb goes...I think you should do it!! From my experience (its my major) cutting carbs is the most efficient way to lose fat. I dont mean not eating them at all, but really cutting back especially anything processed. I make myself 'earn' my carbs with a workout and only eat carbs 1-2 hours after a workout and this does wonders for me! Your body doesnt need the excess carbs found in breads, pastas, ect as long as you are eating fruits and veggies. Its better to focus on lean protein, fruits, veggies and healthy fats and nuts. Drink lots of water as well. Cravings will be stopped by eating healthy!! Good luck!

All diets are restrictive in some form or another. If you "eat for a healthy life style" and stop... you will gain the weight back. Same thing with a low carb diet. The best thing to do is ask yourself "can i do this for the rest of my life?"

I am not sure exactly what you mean by "low carb" if you're talking about the atkins. Which I recently started doing, I realized it was the best thing to do for my goals, eventually I want to do high performance training. I had a great idea on how to accomplish this goal. I was doing low carb in general, not really following the atkins plan. I needed to check how the atkins plan went in to ketosis because I wasn't even sure if I was in ketosis. I went to the source, the atkins plan. It turns out the atkins plan is very similar to the plan I built for myself. The atkins was a bit more structured my method was more trial and error when i got in to the performance. I decided to just do the atkins plan.

When people think of atkins, they think of butter fried eggs and bacon, with huge steak fried in butter and grease. THIS IS NOT THE ATKINS plan. I personally wouldn't eat eggs for the cholesterol reasons, or butter. I use omega 3 butter, and olive oil... I eat a lot of fish and chicken, and a lot of salad. I lost like 20lbs in 3 weeks (before i got in to the atkins) when I started the atkins... in 11 days my stomach went down 1 inch.
