Do you have to have a rest day?

I upped my exercise this week to 45 minutes and from 4 days to 6. I had been running or walking for an hour. I've just been doing the Jillian Michael's 30 day shred, push ups, some light weights and another dvd. Just to switch it up some. I had wanted to add back in running in addition 4 days a week for at least 20 minutes in the next few weeks.

But today is rest day and I feel so ANTSY. Like I NEED to go work out. Would I hurt myself if I went for a short run? Can you work out 7 days if your working out so lightly?

I think it would be ok if you are feeling that good. Your body will let you know when it needs a break just be sure to listen. A short run sounds nice.:smile:

I have not had a rest day in 73 days, I have not hurt myself and I burn between 800-1400 calories a day. I spread it throughout the day and try not to over do it at one shot.
  • I personally don't think it would hurt. We are supposed to do at least 30 minutes of cardio per day. It's not good to lift weights everyday but daily cardio is a good thing :)

It's natural to feel antsy but your body does need a "recovery" day. Just a day for it to recharge and to be ready for the days ahead. Just walking around your house, cleaning, doing other small things/projects will give you an unexpected burn. Enjoy your rest day and get back at 'em tomorrow. great job and continued success!!

It might help you if you thought recovery instead of rest. you don't have to sit on the couch, but do something lower key or less intesnsity. A easy jog/run for 30 min will let you relax and not over strain your muscles.

If you do any weight training, your muscles do need to rest in b/t workouts, to recuperate and rebuild. For cardio, I'm not sure, but I think you can probably just go with how you feel. Personally, I do feel it's important physically and mentally to give yourself a break, but it does make the day harder calorie wise. You can always go for a nice long walk....

it depends how much you exercise. I personally find if i dont take a rest day at least every 3rd day, my performance suffers and i dont run nearly as fast or for as long on the 3rd day. if i really push myself, then ill only run every other day. Ive found this way i increase my distance a lot more easily.

You need to find what works for you though. If you feel well enough to exercise more then do it, but i also find rest days to be good psychologically too, to prevent burn out, and boredom long term

    I guess I shouldn't really say "rest day" I have 4 kids and 3 dogs I don't really get to rest :)

Thanks all for your thoughts. I think I'm going to go do my Yoga for the Warrior dvd and see if that's enough and save my rest day for a day I feel like I really need it.

I have to have at least one rest day. Usually 2. When I exercise I do quite high intensity for 55 mins plus. If I don't have rest days, I burn out.
